Damnit, anyone have a secret for dealing with a swolen ankle? |
|
Mine was self inflicted from when I fell down the steps. I'm trying to work with my feet propped up on the desk but it's not easy.
Any tricks to keeping the swelling down?

I take horse size anti inflams for arthritis but if I do the following it makes it better far faster. Ice if you can- elevation is key- Kick it up on the desk, it really does help keep the blood from rushing to the injury.

2. Vicodin. Lots of vicodin. |
|
If not that, a little 420 will reduce the swelling

14. I saw the thread about the haircut |
|
crappy haircuts do stink...I once tried cutting my own hair when I was about 5, needless to say my mom was less than pleased
I'm doing well, I just found out about 10 minutes ago that I have to go to Saratoga NY this Friday and Saturday with our women's soccer team (somehow they managed to get a NCAA playoff birth) which should be an adventure. My dad and I did plan on painting the living room this weekend but I'm thinking this might be a sign not to attempt it since there is no way the two of us will be able to do a multi-day home improvement project and still be speaking to one another at the end of it

17. I don't play, I'm just their athletic trainer... |
|
I think we got into the playoffs on school reputation because it's been a really down year for us (worst in the program's history) but they are a good bunch of girls and have battled with a lot of injury so as much as I don't want to freeze in upstate NY I do hope they do well.
As for the painting project...I predict it would turn out like a 3 Stooges sketch minus Larry...just Moe and Curly battling it out

less than 20 minutes is not effective in reducing inflammation. Plus your ankle will be pleasantly numb after that.

No elevation of course. Soon, you won't feel a thing. Take it out from time to time if you want to keep it.
It helps me to keep a window open which lists the DU fantasy football standings. Very soothing. Your mileage may vary.

30. If you can stand it being touched... |
|
...a gentle massage using just the fingertips helps with pain and encourages circulation to bring the swelling down a bit faster... other than that...what other folks have said...
Elevation (HINT: try to make sure your knee is supported as well- a straight-leg elevation (i.e., putting your foot up on a chair) can leave you hurting even worse), ice, and an anti-inflammatory and analgesic.
Good luck. Sprained ankles are TEH SUCK.

33. Don't laugh, please, but my boss swears by vinegar and brown paper (think Jack and Jill). |
|
Apparently the method is to tear a brown paper bag in wide strips and soak them in apple cider vinegar and wrap them around the afftected area and secure with a gauze bandage or something to hold it in place. He says that the swelling and bruising will be gone overnight. I haven't tried this myself, but he says he has tried it many times on himself and two boys.

43. Outside the box, Left Field Advice that has worked for me the last 5 bad sprains. |
|
And I've got old-guy former linebacker and outfielder ankles.
Believe it or not...see a chiropractor ! The fastest way for swelling to go down for me was to have my chiro "adjust" the ankle back to it's normal position. I guarantee you it is "out" of alignment. It's a method the 49ers and (World Champion!) N.Y. Giants have been using for the past 4 seasons.
FWIW.
