Not to borrow from Neil Young when he sang about
"almost cutting his hair;" but I had that kind of moment myself just today.

I was out on the back steps with the clipper and the diamond file, ready to do some nail grooming. For more than thirty years, I've had the Classical Guitarist / Clawhammer Banjo Player's fingernail configuration: Left-hand nails relentlessly persecuted until no white part remained; nails long and meticulously rounded and smoothed on the right hand - that right hand's nails sometimes having been the envy of a woman who noticed, and the trigger of so many potential bar fights when noticed by a drunk redneck...

Built-in and home-grown fingerpicks on the right hand, is what I'm talking about here.

I almost took the clippers to those nails on my right hand, wondering why I still maintained them, these many, far too many years past the time when they served the purpose for which I had lavished so much care and time on them.

But habits die hard, and hope dies harder. I carefully shaped those right-hand fingernails with the diamond file, and buffed them with 1200-grit glasscloth, as I've done every week, the better part of two thousand times.

I don't know why. But not everything in this life needs to make sense, does it?

2. You know, when you get old, your memory is the first thing that goes, or at least
I think it is. I don't remember exactly.

3. You're thinking David Crosby. Neil sang "Let's Impeach the President"
Great song!

4. Indeed. I've already been corrected about the singer of that song, and if I had only
taken a moment to remember how it sounded, I'd have realized it wasn't sung by Mr Young.

But still...

8. I understand exactly how you felt when you named the song though
That was the whole point!

5. My dear Redstone...
Indeed, not everything in this life needs to make sense...

As you and I both know only too well.

But when you do something that's tied to your past, and that gives you pleasure...

Well then...

Those are the only reasons you need...

6. You'll continue to do well in your efforts at writing poetry, you will,
because you have a poetic heart.

Not everyone has one of those, you know.

7. Thank you...
You really understand me...

As few do...

Tonight I'm going to read the two poems that will be published, and I'll announce it for the first time to the group...

I'm already feeling the poetry well up inside ...
