I'm going to be in Frankfurt, Germany this
Friday and Saturday (I think - not sure yet). Friday will be meetings, but can anyone suggest some sightseeing for Saturday? Any favorite restaurant or museum or historical sights? I've never been to Germany before (other than sitting in the airport) and wish I had more time there, but want to make use of the time I will have...

Suggestions appreciated! :hi:

1. the Frankfort airport is a trip, make sure you leave yourself plenty of time
to get through it. We went through there this spring and it was like the amazing race and we were only getting a connecting flight.

3. I know - we've flown through the airport many times and it
is odd (I don't really like it). At least we have no connecting flights - just straight into Germany, stay there for about 48 hours, then come home.

in 32 years (yikes...that sounds like such a looooooooong time x( ) but if this is like I remember it...

From what I remember, the u-bahn and the strasses are easy to navigate. Otherwise, just go out and see what you can see.

And have fun!!!

(stupid link isn't working right. It's s'posed to go to Romerburg)

15. The old Medieval quarter is cool. Especially the Rathaus (nothing to do with rats; it's the
Town hall.)

Also, sample as much of the local beer as you can. Germany makes heavenly beer! :9  :9

I think it's finally safe to identify yourself as an American overseas. Most people around the world are overjoyed that Obama was elected and that B*sh is on his way out...

The German people are great. Once you get past their initial reserve, they are very warm, friendly and down-to-Earth.

16. thanks, Aristus! I'd love to see the old Medieval quarter -
I love medieval history --

And YES! Finally, I'm not going to hide my passport everywhere we go - it will be interesting to hear what people say. My husband will talk to anyone, anywhere, about anything, so I'm expecting to have a few good conversations.

My two former neighbors are German - really very nice people, and my dad is German, so I'm really looking forward to spending more than 5 hours in the airport in Germany!

I won't be home this weekend ... otherwise we could have met. But I am going to Berlin today till Sunday.

Hmmmm ... let's see .... how much time do you have? The Goethemuseum is really nice (birthplace of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) and there are two really nice exhibitions going on there. One about the mother of Goethe, the other about letters as objects (I work there).
Also, there is a nice exhibition going on in the Liebighaus about how sculptures looked back in the days. Will go there next week myself.
The inner city is really nice, the so-called Römer.
To have a view over the city you can go to the Maintower. It is worth it.

Restaurants .... can't tell you much there since I barely go out to eat. But there are some downtown.

Have fun and let me know how you liked it!!!

25. The Kristkindlmarkt is fun shopping, and I enjoyed the Goethe House.
You can ride the streetcars drinking apfelwein, and singing the apfelwein anthem, which sounds sorta like "Jingle Bells"...though I was never clear on the words.

43. Hi MissHoneychurch!
I know you live in Germany, but wasn't sure where -- too bad you'll be gone! And I'm sorry my trip is so short - wish I had more time to visit. If this trip goes well, though, we'll be doing some work in Frankfurt so I'll make sure to contact you before we travel next time.

Have fun in Berlin! I'm really looking forward to Saturday - have heard the weather is going to be OK, we might just wander a bit.

23. Find a volksmarch if you're feeling frisky.
Go the the Frankfurt Rathaus to find a schedule.

Usually they happen in the little towns around the big cities on Saturdays and
Sundays.

The bier and brotchen are the best!!

24. Check the train schedules and see if you can get to Cologne and...
Edited on Wed Nov-12-08 08:12 AM by TreasonousBastard
check out the Roemermuseum underneath the Koelner Dom.

When they were fixing bomb damage under the cathedral after WWII, they found it was built over a Roman villa, so they excavated as much as they could and it's now a museum. The cathedral itself is interesting as the tallest in the world, and they may still let you climb to the top of a belltower for a small fee-- a great view on a clear day.

There must be hundreds of other similar daytrips from Frankfurt, and you might be able to fit in a ride on a Rhine riverboat.

On edit...

You can get an early AM train from the Hauptbahnhoff and get to Cologne in 1 1/2 hours for 61 Euros. 2 1/2 hours for 39 Euros. (Trains have gotten VERY expensive since I was there last)

The ride, though should be worth the money by itself. The slow train is the train that goes up the Rhinegau-- the gorgeous part between Bingen and Koblenz. Dunno what route the fast train takes.

Other day trips off the top of my head might be to Nuremberg or Heidelberg.

Do try to take a train somewhere, though-- European trains are an experience unlike anything you'll get here.

29. If you have the time...
think about trying to get to Rothenberg ob Tauber somewhere southish of Nuremberg on the Romantische Strasse.

It's easy to get to by car, but there's no train station so a bus would be necessary if no car. Still easy, since the place has become pretty much a tourist trap. But, German tourist traps aren't like Florida tourist traps.

Rothenberg's claim to fame is that is has never been attacked in any war since the Dark Ages and still has the complete wall around it. Lots of Roman ruins there, too. During the 30 Years War the Burgomeister looked at the French troops building up outside the town and made a deal with the French general to just have a drinking contest instead of a battle. The Burgomeister won the contest and the French honored their part of the deal and walked off and they built a clock in the square commemmorating the deal. In WWII the Allies were ordered not to bomb the place because of its unique history. So, it reamins the most medieval town in the world, even though it does have indoor plumbing and electricity now.

Great shopping with some of the best toy stores in the world, some neat museums, and off season is the best time to go there.

We (the Americans) called it the "Beer Hall" but my German friends called it something else. It was a lot of fun, big mugs of beer, I even think you could get a boot, phones to call other tables and a polka band.

40. I'm up in Düsseldorf, about 90 minutes by train north of there
I usually don't hang around in Frankfurt, but Heidelberg is very nice (less than an hour by train),
and Köln is cool, too (about an hour by train from Frankfurt airport). Stuttgart has a spectacular walking area with the palace of the Württemberg kings about a 5 minute walk from the train station. As for food, I know nothing of where to eat down there. If you get to Berlin, Düsseldorf, or Hamburg, I can help you out. I LOVE going up to Hamburg for the weekend with my wife, should you get the chance, but it is about 3 or more hours from Frankfurt by high-speed train. If you only have the one day, do either Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Mainz, Köln or Düsseldorf.

45. I LOVE FRANKFURT!
Edited on Wed Nov-12-08 11:23 PM by nytemare
I was stationed there in the Army from 91-93. Make sure to hit the Ziel shopping area near downtown. Also, in the middle of downtown is the Romer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%B6mer_(Frankfurt_am_Main)
The ancient Roman bath http://flickr.com/search/?w=23456072@N00&q=frankfurt&m=tags, and St Bartholomew's church are very close together.

.

Everything is pretty much within walking distance, and as I recall the Museum is right there as well.

Also, you might try going to what is now called the Poelzig building, which was turned over by the US Army back to the German government. It is now part of the U. of Frankfurt, and has neat elevators called Paternosters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IG_Farben_Building

During the WWII era, the building was owned by IG Farben, the notorious chemical company that aided the Nazi's by providing Zyclon B to them. It is quite a creepy building, but has interesting architecture, and the paternosters are oh-so-cool and fun to ride on. When I was in, I was an MP, and the building was 5th Corps headquarters. We guarded the building. Many times I did flag call in front of that place.

When you hit the restaurants, I recommend Jaegerschnitzel, witch is schnitzel with a mushroom sauce. Yum.

Keep us posted on your trip!

Here is a video of the building, and the paternoster!
