Best Villian in a Vietnam War Movie
My vote is for Gunnery Sgt Hartmann from "Full Metal Jacket" - who is yours?

1. I didn't take him as a villian
They should have gone to Lou Gossett's house and taken his Oscar and given it to R. Lee Ermey

BTW Ermey also played a helicopter pilot in Apocalypse Now

4. I didn't, either. He was just a hard drill sergeant.
My vote: Staff Sgt. Barnes in Platoon.

11. My drill sergeants would sometimes come in still drunk from the night before

And their antics and verbal abuse made Hartman seem pretty tame.

Pvt. Pyle of course went on to one of the Law&Orders and was fantastic as Abbie Hoffman in "Steal this movie"

and Animal Mother is hilarious on "Chuck" <--highly recommend that show

That dude WAS our CC in boot camp.

D'Onofrio took off after that movie. What the hell ever happened to Matthew Modine? Talk about disappearing of the face of the planet.

15. Again, the question: a villain? Kurtz was as much "sinned against as sinning."
He was the end-product of the soul-less "war for profit" corporate nation that sent him over there in the first place. I think one of the flaws of "Apocalypse Now" is that it talks about Kurtz's pain without ever really showing it. Brando intellectualizes the monologue in which he talks about the Viet Cong cutting off the arms of inoculated children. He refused to be emotional about it, and I think that was a mistake.

Kurtz's best line, in my opinion, comes when he is dictating one of his manifestos right before being killed: "They train young boys to drop fire on people; and yet, their commanders will not allow them to write the word 'fuck' on their airplanes because...it's obscene!"

That sums it up right there: perceptions and misperceptions of what is obscene...

20. That's what made him THE perfect villain.
He was cold and calculating, and would not hesitate to cut off your buddies head and toss it to you while you were penned up in a cage, just to show you who was in charge. Yet Brando humanized him in a way that you felt for him, and you could feel his outrage, and understood what drove him insane. It blurred the line between good guy and bad guy, and made you realize that there really was no such thing as "sides" in their conflict.

25. Since Kurtz has been mentioned several times, I'll go with Animal Mother (if he counts).
Psychotic, homicidal, and horribly racist - I think that about covers it.
