Poll question: Could you live without your posessions?
Just curious. Being used to one lifestyle, if something dramatic happened and everything is lost, would you cope?

1. I've often thought of what I'd take to a desert island
(a la desert island discs) if all I could do was take just a few books, just a few DVDs etc. The music part is taken care of courtesy of my iPod so choosing which CDs I'd take is no problem...put 'em on an iPod!

Books and DVDs? I would DEFINITELY have a problem leaving many of my "children" behind.

3. Reminds me of Steve Martin in "The Jerk"
All I need is just this lamp and that's all I need. Oh, and all I need is this chair and that's all I need. Oh, and all I need is this book and that's all I need. It goes on and on. Picking up stuff along the way out the door. :D

2. I'd have to take ....

my several gigabytes of mp3s. I'd go crazy if I didn't hear Al Green, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, or Anita Baker for a week.

Does food and shelter count as possessions?

33. According to FEMA they do.
Bush cares less about you having anything of your own. Be a Patriot!

He wants everyone to do free public service. I doubt, Bush ever did any except for the punishment for not showing up for his duty.

sometimes possessions are more of a hinderance than a help.

9. Oh yeah. Been there. Survived that.
I don't even want to tell you how much stuff. Or how...
Just, poof. Gone.
I never think about it. But yes, one can always cope. I'd like to say it was a valuable learning experience, but to be perfectly frank it was just, well, f***ed up.
Never recovered the stuff, but have since amassed more stuff. The really precious stuff, like the kid's early art work, the "pressed roses" kind of stuff, is gone forever.
Beats losing a limb, or a loved one.

10. I have
In '97 I got out of a house fire with the clothes on my back and some comic books that happened to be in the part of the house that didn't burn.

I'm getting back to an uncomfortable level of clutter now, time for some donating maybe?

11. I could survive as long as I have my guns.
I'd at least have food and protection in case of disaster. It would suck to lose all the comforts but I can survive without them.

13. Yes and I have got rid of most of them.
I sold my home and most of the things in it and built a mother-in-law apt. and have about 1/2 of what I used to have and I do not need all this stuff.I will get rid of more as soon as I can. I did change my life style in 95 and am doing it even more now. I also buy less and less.I am also pretty old.

15. what makes them yours?
They are temporarily around you, much as water flows by a rock
lingering by a rock before moving on. Posessions come and go.

The rule in life is desire comes and goes. That which feels
and acts upon the desire, is the identity attachment. Posessions
arn't transcended, as long as you carry them in your mind.

I quite enjoy having no posessions, and living the sadhu's life.
Just sadhu == homeless person in the US... and it is abrasive
as hell to be homeless. Hunger cramps, and cold unsafe sleep.

It is not about having or not having. If you are attached, you
are bound to this primitive neanderthal concept that self is
defined by posessions... appearances granted, but merely that.

The king is still the king when travelling naked and alone.

18. I did lose everything in an apartment fire in Austin
caused by faulty electric work done on a water heater outside. I was working third shift and came home at 07:30 and my apartment had been destroyed. The firemen had smashed down the door to let my cat escape (I did find him soon after getting there). Except for some photos that were destroyed, everything else can be replaced.

24. see....
even though that's a sad story... the bit about the cat makes it ok.

(Im not saying all your stuff burning is okay, Im sure you know how I mean that.

If someone gave me the choice either lose all of my cats and keep my posessions, or keep the cats and lose the posetions.. it'll be me, four walls and four cats.

Heyo

27. I ran around yelling HAS ANYONE SEEN A BLACK CAT WITH NO TAIL
and a few people said oh, LB is around here somewhere. I couldn't believe with all the noise and the lights and the chaos I yelled L.B. !!! in my typical sing-song fashion and he popped right up by my feet. Oh I adored that kitty so. He's been gone a long time now but it always makes me smile to remember him.

26. I already live simply. It's great.
Only thing I do have that I need to cull out is my books!

I've always lived simply, and I love it. Very low maintenance lifestyle. No TV. Lots of silence. Highly recommended!

Would miss my computer though, LOL.

28. Well I'd have to, wouldn't I?
Would I preffer to? Hell, no. Could I? yes, been there done that.
I got thrown out 7 years ago with no furniture, my clothes, and only about half of the rest of what I had.
We (my daughter and I) survived.

But if it was a choice between leave it all or go to Arschloch's Hell in Gitmo....

make my life more enjoyable. I'd certainly miss my computer because it is now my main source of information, intellect, and support (those who are "with me").

If you are young and healthy it isn't such a shock. If you're old and lose everything, you don't have time or energy to start again.

I remember to donate to those who need help such as Doctors Without Borders.
