it was more about the caricature i was made out to be that had me shaking my head though nobody who did that actually quoted what i had said, rather, they repeated to everyone else what they thought i *meant*.

11. i'm surprised that people i used to argue with rather heatedly have become some of my favorites
keep that in mind.

part of it is that reading DU opens me to new ideas.

part of it is that you see someone posting enough, you find things in common with them and begin to appreciate them.

i'll bet that applies to your posts.

12. I confess I deserved it
I told someone, I don't even know who, to fuck off last week, then I saw I got a reply. The response was mild but I just shouldn't do that, I felt guilty. Rarely I let my anger get the best of me, even though I have good reason to be sometimes (like why can't I find a job?)I know the original post was probably sarcastic but I just got tired of reading all the bullbaiting about various ethnic groups last week...

There are a certain group of people on this board who think I'm a nasty bully and probably friendless in real life (HA!)

In fact for a short period of time, a group of these posters came into the skeptics group with no other purpose but to flame me..It was quite interesting....

17. it's that frenzy that alarmed me
because the people that flamed me hardest didn't seem to be responding to what i'd written but instead what others had written about me.

i mean it goes with the territory. i was okay with being held accountable for what i actually said, but not what others attributed to me (that i never said or meant).

and i don't think that of you. i don't really care what people who flame me think of me, but i do care that others believe what those people say if it's not true. but then there's not much i can do about that anyway.

i still think Canadians are better at comedy than they are at music (except for Joni Mitchell).

People vented their spleens at you, but at you were speaking out against something that is definitely wrong in the books of most. If you want to really see them go at you, criticize the Dalai Lama.

32. She stated why: he's a homophobe -- he makes no bones about it
Those ideas and beliefs go directly against his supposed teachings -- and the teachings of the original Buddha, Siddhartha.

And, I agree with you about the "God King" part. I have studied alot on Buddhism, and I practice Zen Meditation. I would call myself a "half Zen Buddhist."

37. There's a zillion cites, but here's just a few -- from 1993-2008
I want to say that Buddhism in general is usually gay inclusive, especially in Zen Buddhism. The Dali Lama seems to have a hangup on this issue, and it's a very important issue to have a hangup about. And, what bothers me and Haruka, is that he is THE "face" of Buddhism in the World. He could have so much influence in this matter.

His teachings are almost exactly the same as the Catholic Church's/Pope's, yet the DL is rarely condemned on here.

************************************************

The Dalai Lama was interviewed by CBC News at the time of his visit to Canada during 2007-NOV. Near the end of his interview he was asked whether Buddhism condones love between two men or two women. He replied that Buddhists reject this. Genuine Buddhist practitioners, like Christians, condemn same-sex behavior as sexual misconduct. "So, not permissible, not allowed." 11
'Westerners are too self-absorbed'
Telegraph ^ | 4/1/2006 | Alice Thompson
Posted on Friday, April 21, 2006 5:11:41 PM by Unam Sanctam
...
Although he is known for his tolerant, humane views, he is a surprisingly harsh critic of homosexuality. If you are a Buddhist, he says, it is wrong. "Full stop.
No way round it.
"A gay couple came to see me, seeking my support and blessing. I had to explain our teachings. Another lady introduced another woman as her wife - astonishing. It is the same with a husband and wife using certain sexual practices. Using the other two holes is wrong."
At this point, he looks across at his interpreter - who seems mainly redundant - to check that he has been using the right English words to discuss this delicate matter. The interpreter gives a barely perceptible nod.
"A Western friend asked me what harm could there be between consenting adults having oral sex, if they enjoyed it," the Dalai Lama continues, warming to his theme. "But the purpose of sex is reproduction, according to Buddhism. The other holes don't create life. I don't mind - but I can't condone this way of life."
...

Homosexuality in Vajrayana/Tibetan Buddhism
In a 1997 interview, the Dalai Lama (the leader of Tibetan Buddhism and a widely-respected spiritual figure) was asked about homosexuality. He did not offer any strong answer either way, but noted that all monks are expected to refrain from sex. For laypeople, he commented that the purpose of sex in general is for procreation, so homosexual acts do seem a bit unnatural. He said that sexual desires in themselves are natural, perhaps including homosexual desires, but that one should not try to increase those desires or indulge them without self-control. <4>
In a 1993 talk given in Seattle, the Dalai Lama said:
nature arranged male and female organs "in such a manner that is very suitable... Same-sex organs cannot manage well." But he stopped short of condemning homosexual relationships altogether, saying if two people agree to enter a relationship that is not sexually abusive, "then I don't know. It's difficult to say." <5>
The Dalai Lama was more specific in a meeting with Buddhist leaders and human rights activists in San Francisco in 1997, where he commented that all forms of sex other than penile-vaginal sex are prohibited for Buddhists, whether between heterosexuals or homosexuals. At a press conference the day before the meeting, he said, "From a Buddhist point of view, is generally considered sexual misconduct." But he did note that this rule is for Buddhists, and from society's viewpoint, homosexual relationships can be "of mutual benefit, enjoyable, and harmless." <6>
The Dalai Lama is well known for his activism for human rights, and this specifically includes equal rights for gays. According to an Office of Tibet spokeman, "His Holiness opposes violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation. He urges respect, tolerance, compassion, and the full recognition of human rights for all." <6>

38. This is distressing to me.
But not surprising. Surprising at first, then I thought about it. The Dalai Lama has led a largely monastic life, besides his tours and lectures. I guess we are also to assume that he is celibate. I find it hard to believe that ANYONE could go their whole life without a sexual encounter, but I suppose it's possible. Anyway, such a person would be the last person to ask about human sexuality, at least in my opinion. The guy is enlightened in many ways but this points out that he is woefully ignorant in others. If he were the true enlightened "spirit" that he purports to be then even he would recognize this. Thanks for the info.
