DU Star Giveaway - Question #2

Deep in my soul I know that the descriptor of black is only applied to my folk as a disparaging label. But I will embrace it and be proud and seek the national association for all, and we will succeed in advancement whether colored by these labels or not, and the people will hear us. The web of lies suggests my name is French, but I’m not gonna address that except to say I was born in mass but died elsewhere. Who am I?

4. For the record ...

They're all like that.

Although this is the only one where I put the actual first part of the name in the clue, i.e. "web" for "W.E.B." :)

8. #4 is really interesting - I got fixated on a wrong answer, but you've
definitely piqued my interest for some future reading.

A couple of weeks ago there was an article in the LA Times (IIRC) about the only black-founded town in CA (Allensworth). I don't think there's much there anymore, but I've been planning to stop next time I cross the Valley...

9. It's there ...

I was there this past summer as part of the research.

It's basically a touristy spot, not an actual town now. There's a park guide who knows a lot and is very friendly. If you contact them beforehand (there's an Allensworth preservation group you can find online) you can set up a tour. Everything is a preserved or rebuilt version of the actual buildings and such that were there.

One note is that the guide and others involved with it have an inflated opinion of the town in that they aren't aware of the (literally) hundreds of other black towns that existed. They think Allensworth was the first, but the first was actually established in the early 19th century. (Actually determining the first is part of the research, and it hasn't been done yet.)

Anyway ... my point ... when you decide to go, keep me in mind and let me know, and I'll see if I can arrange a more person introduction to the guide ... very nice guy.

10. Thanks - I'm going to bookmark this
I typically go east-west across the Valley a couple of time in spring and summer en route to the Sierra, and Tulare is on the way. This would be an excellent way to make that drive more palatable...

It sounds from your description that there's a lot more there than the article I read led me to believe; basically, I was picturing house foundations, empty fields, and maybe a visitor center - this sounds much better.

6. THAT'S IT!!!!

Oh, wait, sorry ... that was the beer talking.

:)

No, Lindsey Lohan is not the correct answer, but she did at one time play a character that had nothing to do with the the individual in question, so you get half credit, which will be applied on the third Thursday after the vernal equinox of my 75th year, not counting leap years.
