Poll question: BEST #1 HIT of the EARLY 1970s? (Part 3) |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 07:24 PM by NightTrain
I think it's safe to say, 1973 was *the* year for African-American crossovers. Look how many of the #1 hits in this poll are soul records! :bounce:

3. Went with Marvin myself. |
|
And you're certainly right about this being a damned good grouping of songs!
Well, truth be told, I ain't too nuts about the Carly Simon record, but I'm trying not to eliminate songs merely because I dislike them.

10. Yeah, I debated between the Temps and Marvin |
|
It was a tough call - I could have gone either way for sure. I just really love that whole Temptations album, actually.

I voted for Marvin Gaye, but I loved almost all those songs, especially the Stevie Wonder songs and Papa Was a Rollin' Stone.
LOL....One of my presents for my dad for Christmas was that I made him a CD of soul songs that he likes. Three of the above are on there. He loves Papa Was a Rollin' Stone. I put the long version on there, and he loved it.

we got a thing...goin' on...
I really had a hard time chosing from that list. The 70's was such a great decade for all kinds of music. It may have had some of the worst songs, but it also had a lot of the best songs. and it was way better than the boring ass 80's for popular music, imo.

I went with "Love Train"; I love that song. Yup, 1973, my senior year in high school, I was hanging out with some black kids from a school program I was in. They turned us white kids on to their music, and soul tunes from 1973 still have a special place in my heart. We'd all be singing along to "Love Train." We were also listening to many of the others on your list: "Me and Mrs. Jones," "Superstition," "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," "Killing Me Softly."
In the days before boom boxes were invented, one of the black kids would carry around a portable tape recorder with a whole bunch of great songs on it, some 'hits,' others not. There were several songs from "Superfly" (the title song, "I'm Your Pusher," "Freddie's Dead") and two other tunes we loved: Al Green doing "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" and Isaac Hayes doing "The Look of Love."
NightTrain, thanks for bringing back some great memories with your list. :hi:
BTW, I also really liked "You're So Vain"--heck, I like them all on this list. And one night that year I happened to see the band Stories playing in a club.

I had a tough time deciding.
