I just had to take a self-assessment test for a job. |
|
One of those questionnaires that spends a lot of time asking about stealing and illegal drug use at work. I hope I answered the way they wanted.I told the truth anyway. I am mostly an honest person. I do happen to think that illegal drug use or selling of drugs at work is wrong so those answers were truthful. They also asked about my attitude towards pre-employment drug screening. My personal belief is that they are an invasion of privacy but for the sake of this test (and in an effort to make it to the interviewing stage) I did lie about that. But I told the truth when it asked if I ever exceeded the speed limit. I have (who hasn't?) so I said yes. I also told the truth when it asked about personal use of company computers. I have used them for personal use. It's not a good idea necessarily but it does happen. In any case I didn't want to appear too squeaky clean because I am not.
I am not sure I want to work for a place that uses these tests, as it is really easy to lie in them. I am not sure how useful they actually are. So we'll see.

1. The speed limit question is a red herring |

It's intended to screen out people who are answering as they think the employer wants them to answer. Ditto for the computer question. I once took a similar test with answered scaled from "Strongly Agree" to "Strongly Disagree." One of the questions was "It's sometimes okay to steal from your employer."
Honestly, who gets that one wrong?!?
I think that you answered right in both cases.
