I work for a truck-training school. Can I be a Teamster?

1. If you and your fellow workers in your workplace

elect the Teamsters as your bargaining representative. You can't join as an individual, which is similar for most unions. The major exception to this is building trades or other craft unions, where you do join as an individual regardless of employment status, once you meet the union's qualification criteria.

Having said that, the Teamsters are generally interested in organizing all manner of workplaces. Traditional trucking is actually a relatively small part of the union's membership now.

On edit--not a Teamster but was once involved on a staff level with Teamster activists.

3. While my employers pays us well
we don't have ANY benefits and get fired on whim. It would be good to have a Union. I don't know how my co-workers feel & I'm kinda nervous about bringing it up.

2. Maybe.
I think there is a 'miscellaneous' type of section, where practically anything goes.

Call the local Teamster hall. Do it on your lunch-break. From work. Labor is technically allowed to organize in Amerika.

4. Teamsters are an 'umbrella' Union.
They will organize any workplace, if invited.

For example, Michael Moore wanted to unionise his staff, and the only union who was interested in setting up a local for the three-employee office was the Teamsters.

Call the Hall...you won't regret it.

BTW...I'm not a Teamster, but I wqs a permitee for a while. I like Teamsters!
