1. This is a great movie but very depressing. It has great acting and direction but
what a horrible outcome. It is, however, very instructive.

A fine artistic movie...

2. Kubrick did the right thing about not having a happy ending
It would have lost its power, had he did

3. Yes, Kubrick was honest. It was a great film because of that.
I loved the film and its performances, K. Douglas, A. Menjou etc. Great stuff. A stiff drink of reality, IMHO.

6. You can thank Kirk Douglas for that
Kubrick had originally written the depressing ending, and that's what got Douglas interested in the film. But when Douglas showed up on the first day of filming, Kubrick had changed the ending to a happy one. Douglas told him that if they didn't do the original ending he wouldn't do the film. Kubrick shot the original ending. Douglas not only saved that movie but probably Kubrick's career as well.

4. Yes, one of the great anti-war, anti-stupidity films

But I don't think I can bear to watch it again.

7. I read the book when I was a teen, it helped me
develop a good sense of cynicism about any type of organizations especially the military and disdain for people craving power.

8. An absolutely great film
On very many levels, it is part of my vhs collection's Hall Of Fame...

a personal anecdote...Upon watching the video when I first bought it I realized, watching the opening battle scenes, that I had watched this film on tv when I was a very young child...why? because I remember the scene where the soldiers run past a decapitated corpse. First time I had ever seen anything like that, and obviously the memory has stuck with me, because that was around 45 years ago...Way back then I knew war sucked...

9. Great early Kubrick film. And his wife was the German girl singing at the end.

10. Great movie.
I was at an L.A. screening a few years ago featuring Jan Harlan and James B. Harris, Kubrick's producers, as well as Joe Turkel (Private Arnaud), who also played Lloyd the Bartender in "The Shining."

11. Joe Turkel in Paths of Glory and Blade Runner
Both movies were on tonight?

He sure knew how to pick movies that his character gets killed in
