Oh. My. God. One of my favorite cousins is a wacko.

So, I am at a very nice family event today... the 50th wedding anniversary of my great aunt and uncle. And, during the party I sit down with my sister and a cousin I have known all my life and always liked a lot.

Then it happened. I heard the cousin telling my sister about how great the Fox News Channel is and how much she has "learned" from it. "You'd really like that channel," she tells my sister. And she probably is right. My sister is a solid Republican. But my cousin's enthusiasm for Fox seemed a bit over-the-top.

I started to steer the conversation from Fox News to the economy, which made my cousin launch into defending Bush and saying stuff about how "God is the one in charge" and that everything that is happening is "part of his plan." She also said that the high unemployment is good because it'll force families to have one parent at home with the kids (how that will be the case when everyone is working three jobs to pay the bills was unclear to me).

But, from there, the conversation became downright crazy.

The cousin goes on and on about how "fair and balanced" Fox is and how it's the only news source she can trust. When I interject and say that Fox has a definitely right-wing agenda, is filled mostly with opinion shows in prime time and gets caught lying all the time she says "And who told you that?" I told her that my statement was based on first-hand observation and she just dismissed that as "only my opinion."

At one point, the cousin says to my sister something like: "Have you ever heard of Dick Morris? He really should be the president." She goes on to praise Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly as "really great."

The cousin then says something (I forget exactly what) about Obama's "agenda." I defended Obama saying that he is a really good man who has the nation's interests at heart and is not serving any kind of hidden agenda and is not (as she seemed to imply) the AntiChrist.

The cousin then said that she does not think Obama is the AntiChrist, but that he is "setting us up" for the AntiChrist and that she is "excited to see what will happen" because "it's all been "prophesized" and after the election she can see it all "falling into place."

At one point she said "I'm just glad I'm..." and then she stopped. But, I am pretty sure she was going to say something about being swept up during the Rapture.

So, folks, I think I found a live one. I found one of the elusive 20% of the people who make up the remaining Bush loyalists. Unfortunately, it turned out to be somebody in my own family who now, no doubt, thinks of me as evil.

2. She won't realize it

I don't think she will ever open herself to other opinions long enough to have hers challenged in any way. And why should she? Her point of view provides her with an express ticket out of this troubled world and into Paradise.

She thinks these are the End Times. And she will go to her grave thinking that, even if she never sees the Rapture, her children will see it for sure. It's all in God's hands.
