Insects is best
What are your favorite insects?
Dobsonflies are fun:
And mantises remind me of aliens:

3. I like honeybees
Edited on Sun Nov-16-08 05:43 AM by Tom Kitten
People don't realize how essential they are for growing food and they've been dying off at an alarming rate for years and does our doofus in chief care? Of course not! That would have to do with science!

7. When I was a kid, I was terrified of them...
I'd step on them any chance I could. :(

I feel horrible about that now. I'm thrilled to see them on the rare occasions when I do, and am very careful not to disturb them.

13. I'm not a big fan of the bees themselves
got attacked by an entire nest when I was a kid. :P

But I love their work.

8. Amazing, isn't it?
The males' mandibles are showy, but not very practical...They couldn't do any damage to you. The females' pincers can draw blood, though:

Apparently they have a nasty stench that they use for defense.

11. On a funny videos show I saw a guy using the larva of one of these
things for bait. He reached into his bait box and it bit him and drew blood. The larva!

:scared: :scared:

9. I found an egg case while gardening one day...
but I didn't know what it was. I thought it looked pretty neat, though, and brought it in the house. I set it on a plant table in the basement, under the lights. A couple of weeks later, we had little mantis babies all over the basement.

What did the egg case look like?

And what did you do with all of them?

I find bugs fascinating for some reason. :hi:

BTW, I saw a great harpsichord performance of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier today, by the guy who's the new head of the Ancient Music Institute in England... it was wonderful.

17. Here's a pic of one...

The picture appears to be true to size.

At the time I'd found that the babies had hatched, it was early December. Since we had a bit of a roach problem at the time, I figured I'd let them stay for awhile. Unfortunately, I think they must have eaten each other or something, because one day there were none to be found.

My son's piano teacher wants him to enter a Bach festival next year, where he'll be able to perform on a harpsichord. He's very excited about it!

20. the performer had to tune it in-between one of the preludes and fugues
I forget which key it was in. By the end of the concert, I felt like it was hard to distinguish major from minor keys anymore...

It was kind of interesting to see him tuning the harpsichord.

19. leaves I think
The males have the long eye stalks and the bigger the body size the longer the eye stalks. Males will encounter each other and assess each others stength as a mate by moving up and down to match stalk length..if the two males had similar stalks they started fighting..This was of course over females and it got VERY violent..males would lose eye stalks a lot...

21. Do they grow back?
Or do they just spend the rest of their lives without eyes...which I presume would make their little lives a lot shorter?
