Screw the poll - favorite Prog Rock Band
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 04:12 PM by LynneSin
Since Jethro Tull, Yes and Genesis (the early stuff) was not available.

My favorite would have to be in this order:

1.) Yes
2.) King Crimson
3.) Pink Floyd (although as a favorite band list they are higher than King Crimson)
4.) Rush
5.) The Moody Blues

What are your favorite Prog Rock bands?

Queen is my 2nd favorite all-time band but I barely consider them Prog-Rock.

1. pink floyd is probably the best in this genre
but could we also consider frank zappa in this list? i think much of what he did could be considered prog rock (jazz influenced, use of other than your basic guitar, drums, bass instruments)

Absolutely one of my top five favorite artists of all time (along with Frank Zappa, Todd Rundgren and Mike Keneally...the fifth spot changes on a regular basis).

58. I'm not a huge fan, but I certainly know who they are.
It's not that I don't like them, but when I was into rock/prog rock music, I was young and wanted to listen to flashy instrumental skillz, and Can don't really do that. Of course, now I realize they're a million times better than most crap I was listening to when I was 16, but I just don't listen to much rock music at all anymore.

Haven't they become quite popular with the younger generation over the last 10 years or so? Maybe thinking that means that I'm dating myself, and the kids haven't cared about them since the 90's.

60. well, you're just a few years older than me then
I think maybe they're known by people younger than us, because of a new generation of bands that list them as a big influence or rip them off. 90's grunge bands certainly weren't interested in them.

I'm an experimental musician by trade (my degrees are in music composition), and that's most of what I listen to. Things that most people have seriously never heard of. It's strange sort of musical ghetto, but not an unpleasant one. There are only a few hundred or thousand people in the world that are going to understand my music, but that's life, I guess. I don't let it get me down.

For some perspective, a name that many people will know is John Cage. He was sort of the grandfather of today's experimental music. If you're actually interested, this website has a great streaming experimental music radio station: http://www.wandelweiser.de/ also full of information on some great musicians, and a record label to boot (though they play far more things on the radio station than just the cds they put out).

No, I don't have my own site. I often consider it, but then decide that it's not worth the effort. I really doubt that many more people would find out about me through the internet that are going to be interested than do so through word-of-mouth. I like some things to be old fashioned.

27. Fates Warning, Power of Omens, Symphony X
Of course DT but they've already been mentioned a bit... When Dream & Day Unite is in my top 10.

Fates Warning's No Exit is the best Prog Metal album of all IMO... closely followed by Perfect Symetry.. and I also like A Pleasant Shade of Gray.. but it's mellower then the other 2.

Queensryche's early stuff (Mindcrime, Warning & Rage for Order) Is also fantastic!

If you like Prog - check out Power of Omens: Eyes of the Oracle is unbelievable.. and they're based out of the US (Texas).. not overseas: http://www.myspace.com/powerofomens .

Angra's Holy Land album is a great Prog tribute.. fantastic depth

Symphony X - just listen to The Divine Wings of Tragedy on the Accolade album.. you'll be in love.

Sadly.. my husband loves none of what I have listed above... he prefers "Jenny Jenny" by Tommy Tu-tone :puke: :eyes: . Thankfully he has other attributes, and i have an iPod so I can rock out whenever I'd like... :)

Great Thread!

I consider them to be as outrageously overrated as the Who. That's right, the Who. :puke:

Pink Floyd, ELP, Rush, King Crimson, they're the best of the genre.

Dream Theater (often mentioned as prog rock), well, they're all chops and no soul. One can only listen to so many 64th notes.

I love Gentle Giant so much I named myself after them in 2004 when they allowed us to change our user names.

Before that I was progrocker69, the 69 for my birth year, but I didn't like that people also use that as a sexual reference, so I changed it. :)

Reminds me a lot of Between the Buried and Me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV8Aoy8dH-A

This kind of thing would be, in my warped opinion, some of the best stuff going right now - except - for the life of me I just can't get into this harsh, screechy vocal style. If they would sing or talk through the lyrics like a narrative that would be fine, but when I must have a lyric sheet handy to understand the gravel in the blender I just get annoyed.

Oh, and I checked out SGM's website, and I just loved the interview video in the media section. That dude is so funny, in a cool kind of way, when he's expressing the band's modus operandi more in sounds and gestures than in words. :)

Almost everything they do is analog - no synths and barely any pedals. Dan makes a lot of their stringed instruments and said he makes a specific new instrument for each new CD.

66. Rush is so not prog rock!
There are many characteristics of prog rock (and this is from my head and not Wiki):

*bombastic

*silly overblown concepts (with sci-fi elements, sometimes)

*long instrumentals

*classical music influence

68. Zeppelin and Queen are not Prog Rock. My list follows...
...
---Genesis
---Floyd
---Tull
---Yes
---Moodies
---Crimson
---Rush

Based on how often I listen to them now, after 30-plus years of listening to them. There are many other fine Prog Rock bands I only occasionally delve into now. But ultimately, these labels are kind of limiting. "Queen II," for example, is one of my favorite albums of all time, but while Queen may have had a glam-rock component to its early days, the band turned out to be wholly unique, in large part because of Mercury. Yet I don't care for Queen after "Day at the Races." Likewise, Roxy Music is one of my favorite bands, but they, too, transcended boundaries. As did Eno, and so many others. As far as the traditionally accepted definition of pure Prog Rock, those bands above are what I listen to most often in '08.

Great stuff. It's been years since I've listened to it, though.

82. Rush.
Yes is a close second. I also like Pink Floyd but have almost no use for any other band in your OP.
