I think this man is crazy. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, don't bother.) |
|
He's doing all he can to hold onto me. Now he wants to write a paper with me - why the fuck? It's mid-November, and I have only two weeks of work time left with him. I raised the fact that I have limited time to work with him, but he said he thinks there's enough time and that the paper is "nothing fancy." However, he said that he wants to develop the paper into a co-authorship. (WTF?) He's still meeting with this 25 year-old girl for drinks and God knows what else, and that relationship still sickens me. I can't work with him, and the more he pulls off this shit, the more I can't wait to leave him behind.
I can't really refuse the project - why walk away from an opportunity? But then I don't want to work for him any longer than I'm contracted. This paper will not spill over into the spring, that's for sure (I'll be working for the new guy) - and given my workload this fall, I sure as hell am not writing during Christmas break.
Really, now - how much writing can I do in 40 hours? Sure as hell not an entire paper's worth.
This dude is fucking messed up. I don't know what his motivations are for suddenly being so nice, so communicative, and so offering of work (He actually responds to my emails now! Would you believe that?). I don't trust this, I don't trust him, and I wish he'd just go fuck his dingbat Master's student and leave me the fuck alone.

5. Trust you gut instincts. You are the one closest to the situation, |
|
I cannot count the number of times my gut feelings turned out to be right.
Do what you have to do in the next couple weeks. Then you don't have to answer to him in any way whatsoever after that.
Good Luck.

You should tell him how you feel. Let him know that you don't want anything to do with him.
Tell him you will work for him, and explain to him what you think of him. That way he will know up front it is just about the opportunity that you want to work for him.
If you pretend you like working for him, and really don't. Then the problem is yours.

7. That would cause political problems for me in the department... |
|
no matter how much I want to be upfront with him.
I gave the Assoc. Dean my word that I would make the transition between professors in the most positive way possible, and I plan to stick to that.

8. pass up the opportunity. |
|
seriously. Most likely, if the paper turned out any good, he would find a way to shaft you and take all the credit, anyway, if he's anything as manipulative as this and your previous posts have indicated. Move on, don't overload yourself, and don't worry about this "opportunity". You'll just drive yourself crazy trying to work with this guy.
There will be other opportunities, particularly in the academic world, hopefully with the new guy, who will hopefully be great.

10. I will likely politely decline his "offer." |
|
Although I did just pass a quick email over to the assoc. dean to get his two cents.
The new guy has research and conference paper writing lined up. I can't wait for a normal working relationship.

|
good for you for declining his offer.
And I highly recommend going the polite route.
Let us know how it turns out.
