Permissive Will

Why bone splinter beneath the soldier’s foot.
Why women drown bringing water home.
Why anxious grind teeth and where the dust ends up.
Why rapist smiles. Even in his sleep. Even while her bruises fade.
Why feathers of entangled angels are dipped in browning blood.
Why wrists of suicides, why darkened bathwater.
Hey Stalin, hey Nero, hey unnamed mother covered-eyes.

As a net snares oxygen.
As the closed cry of the child.
As false Alice, as grimness sainted.
As incense strangles the stranger at the door.
As flat bread, plum choice, empty cup.
As the brocade and the singing and the deft gold
Hold high their god of sacrifice left to rot, this same meat.

Sometimes the only god people meet is one of us.
