Tool Time! Are Ryobi tools any good?

Does anyone have experience with their cordless tools?

1. Yes

and yes. They were good 10 years ago. If nothing has changed I'd recommend Ryobi for hardcore use. We never used cordless regularly so don't count on my advice for that part.

There was a sheetrocker who lived by his cordless Makita. Just sayin...

5. I saw a lot of their stuff being used by professional electricians/maintenance

people and heavy tool users like elevator installers in commercial buildings. I can't give you specific tools, but they were pretty well represented. Don't know if cordless or not.
This was until about 1 1/2 years ago.

11. Saw this again and tried to figure out what I was thinking

I looked and am pretty sure I meant Milwaukee tools instead of Ryobi.

The other tools we used that were near invincible were Porter-Cable.

3. Ryobi are good tools

The only name I'd advise against is Black & Decker. They're usually a bit cheaper than other recognized brands but I think they're very light duty and not worth the discount.


I've used Ryobi and they'll do the job.

6. I've got a bunch of Ryobi

tools. Thumbs up for the money. Then again, I'm not a pro. Hard daily use might kill them, I don't know.

7. I have a Ryobi router that is excellent.

Don't have any cordless stuff of theirs, though.

8. I bought a set of four 18V rechargeables a few years

ago, and two of them have burned out. I am a very casual user of them and not overly hard on tools. My girlfriend used to work at Home Dump and she said more Ryobis got returned than anything else. Just my $.02.

9. Mr. D. passes along his experience.

He is a very experienced woodworker, carpenter, uses tools daily.
He says Ryobi drill and router are well made, he emphasizes " the machinery parts of them are well made" the materials they are made of ( housing, etc) don't last.
Drill "crapped out" on him, router still works after several years, but not good for hard use.
He says they are fine for light use.
He has a Ryobi drill press, long lasting.

lighter weight w/ more power and holds charge far longer.

12. I use Ryobi and Milwaukee drills at work.

Milwaukee are tougher but more expensive. Ryobi are fine for what you pay for.If you are just going to use it around the house, I'd go for Ryobi.

14. We have a set of Ryobi 18 volt cordless tools, and I really like them.

Flashlight, hand vac, drill, small circular saw. We do need to get some new batteries now, we've had the set for 5 years or so and the batteries no longer hold a charge for REAL long, but I really like the set, and so does hubby.

15. The flashlight is one of the best I've used.

... and the fan is great. Saved me several times working on top of elevators and in mech rooms.

17. I don't have the fan, but I do love the flashlight! You can aim it in

any direction and focus the beam, and I love it.

Different sizes of drills, saws, flashlights, etc. Love 'em! You can get a replacement battery that lasts practically forever.
