I need Brazilian jazz or Reggae suggestions
Someone gave me a bunch of I-tune money and I don't know what to spend it on. I stopped listening to contemporary music about the time Disco was in vogue and now mostly listen to Flamenco and Classical but I like Reggae and Brazilian jazz. Unfortunately this stuff is not easy to sample so all I've got is Jao-Giberto/Getz and Bob Marley. Need new artists to expand my mind.

What have you heard? What do you like? What don't you like?

2. You've come to the right place for Reggae (and Ska)
Most people don't know, or choose to forget, that Ska fathered (Skinhead) Reggae (with Rocksteady occuring in between). I'll give you a short list of artists I like from the 60s to 70s. Keep in mind that most artists from the 60s and 70s changed their styles with the times, including Bob Marley who started in Ska but obviously was a pioneer in the Roots Reggae movement of the 70s. Thus, most Ska artists ended up playing Reggae by the close of the 60s decade.

Ska (1959-1966)

The Skatalites (anything from Studio 1 or Trojan is typically good but be prepared for alot of instrumentals)
Desmond Dekker
Prince Buster
Millie Smalls
Derrick Morgan
Byron Lee and The Dragonaires

Rocksteady (1966-1967)

The Maytals
The Gaylads
The Parragons
Tommy McCook and The Supersonics
The Gaylettes
The Ebony Sisters
Bob Andy
Phyllis Dillon (MY FAVORITE OF ALL TIME)

Skinhead Reggae (1968-1972)

The Chrystalites
Lee Perry
SYMARIP
The Pyramids
Claudette (Claudette and the Corporation)
Rico Rodriguez
Hot Rod Allstars

Also, be on the look out for anything on the Trojan or Studio 1/Treasure Isle record labels which specializes in the aforementioned styles and timeframes. If you have any questions I'm here to guide you through your boss adventures in Jamaican music.

3. O.K. first question "Skinhead Reggae"?
I just can't picture Sarah Palin followers playing Reggae. I must be missing vital info.

Otherwise, thanks for the input. I will try to sample these as time permits.

9. different skinheads - sort of
There's a lot of history behind the skins in England, but basically it started as a labor youth movement. Some were non-racist Leftists, some were racist Rightists/Nationalists, and all sorts of things in between. I have some non-racist skinhead friends who I jokingly call "the meatheads of the punk movement" in good nature.

But yeah, I second checking out some Trojan Records stuff. Also, get a Pandora.com account and look me up ("unpossibles"). I have an old school ska/rocksteady/reggae station on there, and you can sample stuff too.

There's some great Brazilian stuff out there too, and you may like Cuban too - I tend to like both a lot. If you want something less traditional, check out David Byrne's Rei Momo album - it's great, and a good introduction to Brazilian and latin music and players. My favorite in the Latin world right now is Cuban bass player Cachao. He just died, but his stuff is amazing.

Feel free to hit me up if you want more specific ideas, or check out my Pandora stations.

Putumayo has some great Brazilian albums. Too bad they don't do iTunes.

On Edit: iTunes Essentials has three volumes of Brazilian music.

10. Putumayo puts out a lot of great world music.
You can listen to samples of music when you click on an album. Figure out which artists you like, then look 'em up on iTunes.
