How do you stay warm in winter?
I love my flannel PJs and sheet, but the best thing of all is the heated mattress pad that we got for Christmas last year. The heat rises to the top of the covers and surrounds you in a blanket of warmth. I could stay in bed all day.

1. The old fashioned
Dog blanket...

Put two dogs under the covers before you get in. Works like a charm ;)

8. We don't let the dog sleep in the bed
She's a miniature schnauzer, so I don't know how much heat she would put out anyway.

10. I have two rat terriers and they keep me mighty warm
so a mini schauzer would put off some heat. But, since you don't have the dog sleep with you anyway....

Good luck!

Edited on Thu Nov-20-08 03:45 PM by BrklynLiberal
On top of the covers, not underneath.
Then they all cuddle up next to me while sleeping. Makes it difficult for me to move, but I sure am warm..

6. No, it's just a heated PAD
It's just like a cross between a mattress pad and an electric blanket. It was a gift, so I don't know about the pricing.

I think it's better than an electric blanket because the heat rises up to your body and warms all the air between you and the covers.

16. Shivering works pretty well. But at night, I'm fortunate enough to have the blessed
presence of Mrs R, and since we tend to sleep in positions that wouldn't allow a piece of paper to fit between us, our system allows us to turn the heat WAY down.

Makes is difficult to want to haul my sorry old self out of that bed in the morning, though.

23. Waterbed
Yes, I'm in FL, but it's all relative--we went from mid 80s to a low of 40 this week. When I jettisoned the ex, I also jettisoned the lousy bed he forced on me and went back to a waterbed (woohoo to CL--only $25!). I leave the heater off most of the time and just remembered I had it, so had it warmed up just in time. OMFG--it's like slipping back into the womb. Of course, the down mattress pad, the ultrasuede comforter, dog, and two cats make for overkill, but my blood's so thin I can't complain.

BTW, I have a friend in NYC who swears by something like this dealie, which is a water-filled mattress pad that either heats OR cools, allowing you to set your thermostat lower (or higher) and still survive the weather.

64. Old trick I learned
Back around December 1971 I was freezing while waiting for a bus in Massachusetts. As a New Jersey native, I had never experienced a Massachusetts winter and didn't know how to dress for it.

A couple of old factory worker guys at the bus stop told me they wore their wives' old panty hose under their pants in winter. That thin, non-bulky layer of nylon combined with their regular cotton work pants kept their legs warm even in a Massachusetts winter.

36. Night before last
it was hubby, the dog and the electric blanket.
Went like this:
Daddy turned on his side of the blanket, Mommy didn't turn on hers.
Dog (aka Goldilocks) gets up on Daddy's side, decides it's too hot, gets down on the floor in his own bed, decides it's too cold, then gets up on Mommy's side where it seems to be just right.
Where he stayed.
Kept trying to move him more to the center... uh, let me put that differently.
Anywho, I must have done some scrunching because I woke up with a terrrrrible back ache, just now starting to walk it off.

70. I had to do that once
The heat in my dorm room broke on a Friday evening and nobody was going to be around to fix it until Monday. That was in an all-concrete dorm, in Toronto, Canada, in late November, I believe.

The inside of our window had so much ice *inside* it come Monday that my roommate and I couldn't see out of it. I'd estimate the interior temp at around 55 degrees during the day.

72. I wear my Lava Booties!
They each have a little slit on the top to hold these little microwaveable gel packets. Warm tootsies!

74. We're 3 weeks in to November...
...and I'm barely starting to wear a long sleeved t-shirt when I go out after dark.

Ah, SoCal.

78. Central heat in our home.
of the hot air kind. Bloody expensive though :( We turn it down and have a little heater for the bedroom and that stays 65 - the rest of the house goes down to 55.

Best kind I remember was the stored electric heaters my parents have. They are charged up part-way in the day and most-way overnight with off-peak electric; the electric company decides when to turn on and off the heating. However the heat gets stored in the heater and if you get a little too chilly you could release some of the heat. The electric company also knows if it's going to be especially chilly and will charge up for longer if it is going to be extra-cold.

Mark.

83. Microfleece Sheets & Pillowcases (soooo soft too!), goose-down
pillows(6 of them)2 extra warmth down comforters, a regular quilt and lots of fleece blankets layered under the down comforters. It's' so cozy, but the only problem is, I can't stand getting out of bed in the morning. I feel so safe and warm under there - like nothing bad could ever happen. Every year, I ask for more down items for my bed for Christmas, so it just keeps getting fluffier and fluffier. This year, I might go for the ultimate - a featherbed.

84. I live in Vegas. We still have our window cracked open at night and a fan going.
I'm more inclined to use a blanket to protect my 'nads from cats who think we're their beds at night than I am to keep warm.

And then there's the one who insists on laying on the very top of my chest, almost my neck. She has this tendency to shove my CPAP mask up my nose sometimes. But I love the little shit so what can I do? :P

85. Pantihose under jeans or sweat pants are great in the winter
My son lives in Chicago, and swears by these. You can put them in your pockets, in your shoes, or where ever you are most sensitive. They even sell gloves with a pocket to put one of the warmers into.
