perhaps between the recorder and the computer (is it analog out to analog in on the computer? If it's digital to digital, your recorder might be faulty).
Note that some audio programs have hum-killing plug-ins, and tight equalization at a few of the related frequencies (60Hz, 180hz, multiples) can give back a few increments of quality (but not like a clean recording).
Most modern phones record plenty well. I should know.

so I don't think it is anything between the computer and the recorder (and the earliest two recordings were fine) it seems to have been something in the recorder itself that happened maybe in July? Maybe I did drop it, I sure don't remember. It records but the playback - either through it's own little speaker (and I would imagine ear buds) or after loading to computer - is terrible.
