It's hard to catch baby mice. |
|
We have mice in the utility room, so the door has to be closed all the time to keep them out of the rest of the house.
Before I set the traps out we saw one adult and a baby. So far I've caught two adults. But the baby is too light to trigger the trap.
I used peanut butter first. Caught one adult. The peanut butter had been completely cleaned from the other trap and it hadn't sprung.
Next I tightly tied a tiny piece of shrimp to the triggers. Caught another adult, but the shrimp was gone from the other unsprung trap. The string and knot were still there. I guess I'll have to fatten him up so I can catch him.
It's OK to hate me for trying to trap infant mice. Go ahead. I feel like a shit, but Miz t. WILL NOT tolerate mice in her house. :-(

I spent years working on testing rodents for viruses..They do carry some scary stuff. So no, I will not hate on you for trapping mice..And unfortunately those "Have a heart" traps aren't effective.

2. I'm using the old fashioned kind. More humane? |
|
If you use the sticky sheet, now you got a live mouse stuck to some paper. Then what? Starvation? Stomp it? Gas chamber? Lethal injection?
The traps seem to be quick, anyway. WHAP! Kinda like a guillotine.

4. I actually though about the Havaheart. |
|
I dunno. They're at least $10 or $15 for a small one. The old fashioned ones were 2 for 98 cents. And I don't think the little critter would be heavy enough to spring it either.

7. We actually tried that. |
|
We have a next door cat. Put him in the utility room. He KNEW there were mice in there. Sat crouched in front of the freezer for hours. Later moved to in front of the washer. (It's a big room.)
I guess they just wouldn't come out where he could get at them.

8. That must have been very frustrating for him. |
|
Maybe we have stupider mice. My cats quickly ate a whole family of mice a few years ago.

10. He seemed to be disappointed. |

I had to drag him out of there. He's not allowed to sleep over. ;-)

15. Mice are nocturnal; so are cats. |
|
Maybe just this once the cat should be allowed to spend the night. I think he could take care of the situation if he had one night to do his work.

6. Ain't real humane, but I'd guess those glue-tray traps would work; weight |
|
shouldn't be a factor there.

9. I'd avoid the gluetraps, but I'm not sure if a snap trap would be humane on a baby mouse. |
|
I dunno if the live traps would be set off by the baby mouse's weight, but it'd be worth a shot.
It seems the snap traps only kill if the mouse is the right size, we had a few at work that were caught by snap traps that got their leg and not their neck. The poor nasty things were still alive and trying to chew their leg off.
The glue traps are horrible, I was so upset when Terminex put those out at work.
I don't want to hurt a mouse, but I have no desire to harbor Hantavirus carriers either.

12. Mousecubes. That's what you need. |
|
I'm not for having the old fashioned traps that snap their heads off, sorry too gruesome. So when we had a mouse problem, we got the mousecubes. Put a peanut butter cracker in at one end, smear the door with peanut butter. They go in and don't come out. They work well; we caught a number of mice, mainly small fieldmice.
It gets more interesting with our dog though. She likes rodents as snacks. In this case, the mousecubes were pre-caught snacks. With the added bonus of peanut butter. Though I don't know if it was the rodents or the peanut butter ... we found a number of crunched up mousecubes. However I know she likes rodents - one day we made the mistake of leaving her in the house alone with access to a hamster cage complete with hamster. Upon the return we found the hamster cage knocked over, and opened up. And no hamster. Well not initially...
But I'd definitely vote on the mousecubes.
Mark.

occasional mouse - old house and more tiny ways in that Carter's has Little Liver Pills. Tried the sticky traps but it seems no matter where we put them the dog finds them with a paw then there's this "slap, slap, slap" on the floor...

17. Update: I got the 'baby' and another adult. |
|
I guess I fattened the baby up enough. He finally triggered a trap with the shrimp tied in. And then I found a dead mouse (natural causes? starvation?) in the bottom of a large cardboard box. Looks like he got in and couldn't get out. That's 4 meeces so far. Miz t. is happy. :-)
