Vampira died this year and I had no idea
I thought she must have died long ago. I guess I was just too caught up in the primaries.

1. Maila Nurmi died? I didn't know that. That's sad.
I always liked her. She was related to the great runner Paavo Nurmi. She was everything Elvira was not. Awwwww.

2. So she claimed
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maila_Nurmi#Early_life

Born as Maila Elizabeth Syrjäniemi, she claimed to be the niece of the Finnish athlete Paavo Nurmi, who began setting long-distance running world records in 1921, the year before her birth. She moved to the United States with her family when she was two years old and grew up in Ashtabula, Ohio, home to the largest Finnish-American community in Ohio.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paavo_Nurmi#Trivia

A Hollywood star, Maila Nurmi, who created the well-remembered 1950s character of Vampira, claims to be Paavo Nurmi's niece. Her portrayal of this character as a television horror host and in films was influential over decades that followed. Their consanguinity, however, has not been verified.

I just read too that she died without family to make funeral arrangements. :(

10. If memory serves
Nurmi had a great niece or something like that. Some of her fans passed the hat around and paid for the arrangements.

7. Elvira was hot, too. It's just that Elvira was a total rip-off
of Vampira. Vampira had a great tv show. Any copies of her show on VHS or DVD?

11. Well, pat myself on the back for that then.
Some time back a DUer had a pic of a Japense guy in water with rain on his face and I knew it was from Godzilla right off the bat.

8. Ya gotta love someone who loved what they did, like this...
Seriously, she probably enjoyed her gig more than I do. Bless her for it.
