5. They seem overrated because their good stuff was never their popular stuff. |
|
"Waiting For The Sun", the song, not the album, is astonishing; a seamless blend of psychedelic rock and hard-edged Southwestern rock. "Peace Frog" (crazy title!) sounds as though it was written and arranged by Jimi Hendrix (and what a jaw-dropper of a cover he could have done...)
And the "Sanctuary" section of the song "The Soft Parade" is quietly moving; the most intensely personal thing Jim Morrison ever recorded. It sounds like a cross between an annunciation of death, and a desire to atone to his father for his failings as a son...
I'm a fan of The Doors, but I'm pretty clear-eyed when it comes to their pretentious reputation.

11. Ahh, Peace Frog . . . . |
|
I love that song. I used to live in Venice and it reminds of those days. A friend of mine used to live in the same apartment that Morrison lived in back before they hit it big. It's at 15 Horizon in Venice. There's a plaque on the door, WC Fields once lived in the building too. As far as albums overall, I liked Strange Days the best, but I've grown to appreciate Soft Parade as well.
I wish Jim would've survived, to imagine what he could've accomplished in all those years since he died. A real tragedy.

6. I completely disagree. |
|
I think they are among the most influential bands of the last 50 years. "The End" is a song that makes me stop whatever I'm doing at the moment just to listen to it.

The band, eh. Nothing special, and Jim Morrison is a proto-emo shit.

8. I don't really think they're overrated |
|
They have a lot of fans, but it's been relatively common for critics to call them overrated and/or trash them for quite a while now. Considering that fact, I don't see them as particularly overrated. Some of their songs= overplayed on classic rock stations? Of course. But all songs played on classic rock stations tend to be overplayed. Most of them haven't substantially altered their playlists for decades.

I arrived at Ft. Sill, Ok for basic training about 2am back in the summer of '82, (27 July '82 - some things stay with you, lol!) We take a bus to the post from the airport, and about 3am we get to the "reception" center. It's an old two room wooden building slapped up during WWII and probably still being used today. They give us a pair of skivvies, some socks, and a towel, and sit us down at some old wooden school desks, you know, the kind where the seat is attached to the desk. Then they pass out plain blank postcards, and instruct us to "notify your next of kin that you have arrived safely at Ft. Sill, and are now in the custody of the US Army". Most of us have now been up since 4am the previous day. In the back room, where the extra drill instructors are waiting for their turn with us, I hear "The End" playing. Coincidence? I think not. Most surreal experience of my life? You betcha!

12. Ah, the middle of the night arrival! |
|
I pulled into Ft. Benning at some weird hour after a 2 hour bus ride from Atlanta. Most suureal and disorienting thing in my life.
Of course, it's nothing compared to the comedy of errors that erupted when they put us on the cattle trucks and drove us over to the actual "starship" barracks a few days later...
By the way, I think Sill has torn down most of the decrepit old wooden buildings. I did FAOBC there in 1997, and there weren't many around then. The basic training/AIT guys were across the highway from main post, and the OBC and OAC students lived in the high rise next to "Aiming Circle Hill".

For the most part, it's cheesy lounge music dressed up as "bluesy", though I still have a thing for "Light My Fire" mostly for the minor sevenths and the keyboard break. Otherwise, pfffft.

Got beaucoup dinkidau listening to the Doors.
'The End' sucked badly, though. Like the hiccups during an acid trip...
Much preferred Cream, actually.
