Man rescued from Space Needle's outer ring

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Two unidentified negotiators watch as a man who
slipped through a security barrier at the top of
the Space Needle gestures while talking to them.

A reportedly despondent man who crawled out on the Space Needle observation deck yesterday was rescued by negotiators and fire crews.

The man alternately walked and sat on the outer ring of the Needle's observation deck -- 520 feet above the ground -- for about three hours while police negotiators sat on the inner ring, talking to him.

He finally agreed to put on a safety harness and the Seattle Fire Department high-angle rescue team helped him crawl back along a support beam to safety, police said.

The man, reportedly from Seattle and about 30 years old, was taken to Harborview Medical Center for evaluation, police Officer Deanna Nollette said.

2. At least in Canada he'd get the help he needs.

Here in the US, unless he has good insurance, he might see a shrink once before they put him back out on the street.

3. Poor guy.
If a bed happens to be open at North Sound or West Seattle or some other mental health facility, maybe he'll get help.

I hope that real help is available.
