I don't know, isn't Hollywood carrying this beautiful blond turning nasty and ugly for a movie role thingy a little far?? (please don't flame me ;) snort.)

1. Monster...
..I haven't seen the film yet. ( Not carried in mainstream theaters.), but I understand her performance is outstanding aside from the appearance transformation. Of course the shallow media harps on the looks transformation rather than the acting job.

4. She's a white South African
but that shouldn't automatically get one branded as a racist. Has she actually said anything racist during interviews?

22. Theron was magnificent
in this film. I had heard a lot of hype, but she was BETTER than the hype. She made me feel like I was watching a life, not a movie. Her director, Patty Jenkins, worked her hard, pushed her and believed in her. Theron credits her performance to the director and her leading lady, Christina Ricci, who was fearless.

Her performance was the best I have ever seen in my lifetime and I am a 43 year old film buff.

6. I would LOVE to see her lose!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have not seen the movie, but everything else she's been in she's been horrible or mediocre. I figure her turn in this movie is simply a charade, like Nicole Kidman's, where a talentless actress becomes ugly and then people think she can act.

14. Well, Roger Ebert said she was incredible, and he raved about Passion
so I'm willing to believe he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I'll probably rent it, but I hear it's a very bad movie.

Still, she's probably going to win only because she's young and beautiful--I say, give it to an old broad, but they never do that anymore--it's sickening.

17. I've always liked Ebert...
... and most of the times agreed with his reviews. After his gush-fest over the Passion, I don't know what to think. I think I don't hold him in that elevated estimation any more :(

19. I liked him when Gene Siskel was alive--they often fought over
who was right, and the tension between them made for a great show.

Can't say I agree with him much, and really don't now after his love-fest over Passion. I mean, he really thought it was the greatest movie ever!

10. that's because she doesn't smile
i've neer seen her smile, not even the usual Hollywood-show-off-your-teeth-but don't-get any-wrinkles kinda smile. She comes off as grumpy or depressed most of the time.

9. I don't care WHO wins.. I have seen none of the movies
and don't give a hoot :)

It's all about the "Who are you wearing"?.. "Who did your jewels"?.. and giving millionaire actors goody bags worth tens of thousands of dollars, followed by fancy parties..

The old Oscars were the real deal.. They had dinner, handed out the awards, and went home.. We saw who won on the news :)

There is NO reason for this to drag on for HOURS and HOURS and HOURS. I will be watching stuff that my dish thingie recorded for me :)

13. It's a pagan holiday
Movie stars have replaced agent mythic gods. They live the heroes journey, they are immortal. Once a year - (the other awards don't count) we celebrate the gods on Mt. Olympus, literally.

23. Me TOOOOooooo
Her acting was awesome, and she is just darling! I really enjoyed that movie. Of course, that's the only one of the Oscar-nominated movies I've seen this year. So it's not like I'm biased or anything...

About playing a prostitute (in this case, a serial-killer prostitute) and winning an Oscar?

18. Naomi Watts rocks!
Not to knock Charlize, but Naomi was just amazing in 21 Grams.

I'm also madly in love with her.

21. it could just be jingoism
or the fact that I thought Monster was kinda "TV movie of the week-ish" or the boring predictability of a good looking chick uglying up to win an Oscar but I want Naomi to win
