8. My sympathies to your friend, my friend...
I've been there and done that and it's no picnic. I had three surgeries in seven years until the last one finally worked. I'm fine now, but it was a long hard road and I wish much better luck to your friend. I was fortunate to find a wonderful surgeon at a teaching hospital, where they had experience with what ailed me, but it was still tough. Let your friend know that I'll be thinking of her and wishing her a speedier recovery than I had. I also highly recommend Percocet for pain, after discharge. It made me see things crouching in corners, but I knew it was just the meds and it really made a difference. Your friend is very fortunate to have you in her corner and please give her a hug from me...

17. I don't blame you. If I knew what I'd be facing, I'd have hidden in the corner, too...
That's why support when facing surgery is so important. It's very frightening. I was fortunate to have a lot of support, my good friend drove me numerous times and three friends of mine drove all the way to Boston, twice, to visit me. Even my business friends, my contacts from the commercial networks who I spoke to everyday, sent me things and one even called me. I worried later about our conversation, LOL, since I was still on morphine... But, even so, I never felt so alone in my life.:scared:

One unusual thing was that a lot of the support I received, especially considering the kind of surgery I was facing which was embarrassing and even kind of creeped me out, came from males. My friend who drove me was a guy, stood by me through all three surgeries, unlike even my mother, my favorite publicist from CBS who called me (who I later found out was facing a liver transplant) was male, and my two bosses at the time were both male and couldn't have been more supportive or understanding. The female boss that I acquired later was both dismissive and couldn't have been more unpleasant. Strange...

So your friend is very fortunate to have you. Tell her, from me, that if I can do this, anyone can. I'm not the least bit squeamish when it comes to helping other people, moved in with my SO for the first time when he was facing surgery and I was willing to do anything that he needed. I understood how he felt... But when it comes to me, I'm scared to death.;(

Good luck to your friend and let us know how she is. If anyone will be supportive and send all the positive vibes that they've got, it's the compassionate folks on DU...:-)
