I will off for a while as we are getting rid of AOL and I don't know when we will get new service.

1. How hard was it for you to terminate service?

When I did it, I actually had to reach through the phoneline and strangle the person on the other end.

3. Here's what I wound up doing

I called to cancel, armed with what I thought was an impervious (though false) excuse: "My computer crashed, and I won't have any way to access the internet for the foreseeable future."

"I'm sorry to hear that, sir. But we're happy to extend you a free six month grace period, so that if you get a computer in that time you can be back online right away."

After literally fifteen minutes back and forth like this, I said "I don't want to be a hard-ass, but this conversation is going to end with you telling me that my service is terminated effective immediately. Do I need to speak with a supervisor?"

I later learned that AOL's call center workers had some kind of aggressive incentive program to make sure that people stayed with the service, more or less at any cost. This policy has changed since then, but I was amazed at how cut-throat they were about it at the time.
