Happy Anniversary, JeffR ...

Sixteen years ago today, JeffR and I, on our way home from a Trivia League game, decided to share a cab. We lived in close proximity to each other, so it was the common sense thing to do.

By the time we got to my place, we were deep in discussion – about what, I don’t remember at all.

I invited him in to continue the conversation over a glass of wine.

That night he became, as he often refers to himself, the man who wouldn’t leave.

He wouldn’t leave when he woke up to what would have scared most men off immediately – my hectic household, more insane asylum than peaceful abode, occupied by my often impossible-to-live-with daughter, my teen-aged son with his entourage of friends who came-and-went at all hours, and various and sundry pets who no one ever remembered actually bringing home.

He wouldn’t leave when my saner friends badgered him about “his intentions”, and even administered a quiz at our annual Christmas get-together, to ensure he really knew me before being deemed acceptable.

He wouldn’t leave when my wackier friends showed up on the doorstep, insisting on devouring hours of my time; when they demanded I play banker, babysitter, psychiatrist and/or marriage counselor regardless of the hour, or the disruption of our lives.

He wouldn’t leave when the times were bad; when my job became a nightmare which I just had to complain about over and over; when the roof leaked and the plumbing shut down; when I insisted we redecorate every room in the house – at least once every three weeks.

He wouldn’t leave when I got sick; when I was confined to bed for months, and he had to look after me 24/7 to the point where he had no real life of his own.

He wouldn’t leave when I was a crabby bitch, when I was depressed, when I was hysterical, when I was aloof or distant, when I was in-his-face demanding of attention, when I was oh-woe-is-me or you just don’t understand what I’m going through here, bud.

And as a true testament to his patience, fortitude, and undying devotion, when I blasted Stevie Nicks CDs and he had no choice but to listen to them (a fate he considers worse than death), he still wouldn’t leave.

Sixteen years later, he still won’t leave – and I hope he never does.
