4. No German accent
and you never forget you're watching Tom Cruise. I think his off screen weirdness doesn't help me take him seriously. He's a good actor who has made some good films. But he doesn't have the gravitas to play a role like this.

57. "No German Accent"
Yeah, well, that famous and wonderful movie "Spartacus" has British and American actors playing pre-Italians and it's all in English, not Latin :P

How often do we get a period-piece movie that depicts all languages involved and includes subtitles?

I don't know what movie this is for, but I bet Gary Oldman would have been a better choice. There are a few roles I've seen him in where I didn't know that it was him! :D

43. Yeah, I think American soldiers even had a strange fascination with German regalia.
In the closing months of the war, my uncle wrote home on Nazi letterhead. I'm sure he thought it was a lark, his family thought he had been captured. We were also looking through some of my wife's father's WWII stuff and found pictures of guys in his unit who tried on Wehrmacht uniforms and posed in them. I guess they were bored.

22. Germany is very much against Scientology and Tom Cruise.
Bad casting.

"Josef Joffe, a German journalist who has criticized what he views as the German “obsession” with Scientology, said that in this case the combination of star and subject was simply too combustible. “Stauffenberg for Germans is like Jefferson and Lincoln, motherhood, and apple pie all rolled into one,” he said in an interview. “Germany is a country of established churches, and so Scientology is viewed as a cult and, worse, totalitarian and exploitative. A professing Scientologist in the role of Stauffenberg is like casting Judas as Jesus. It is secular blasphemy.”

German officials, for their part, have been eager to clarify their position.

“The German military has a special interest in the authentic portrayal of the events of July 20, 1944, and in the portrayal of Stauffenberg as a person,” Lt. Col. Klaus Reinecke, the defense ministry spokesman, said. Still, the colonel denied that the ministry had actually banned filming in the former headquarters of the German military in Berlin. The film’s producers, he said, had not applied for permission to the ministry, which still occupies the building.

Carl Woebcken, chief executive of Studio Babelsberg, which is finishing a deal to be the German co-producer of the film, confirmed this. But he said German officials had intervened to delay permits to allow shooting scenes in the Bendler Block complex, which now houses a memorial dedicated to Germans who resisted the Nazi regime.

28. It's too bad. The plot to kill Hitler could make a great movie, in the right hands.
Von Stauffenberg was an interesting and complex character. His story deserves to be told. But by an actor who can, you know, act.

34. I know! I've thought he was an unsung hero of WWII for a long time
And then they cast Tom effin' Cruise in the major Hollywood film... :grr:

A) There are tons of great German actors out there, why not hire one? B) If you must go with a marquee name, I can think of 40 actors off the top of my head who would have been better suited for this role than Tom Cruise.
