3. First time I saw a possum he HISSED at me!
Scared the holy heck outa me as I did't know what it was (new to the geographical area at the time and it was kinda stuck in my porch when I opened the door and we saw each other). I thought it was a humungus rat or something, but when he hisssed at me I quickly closed the door and did not want to open it again.

Boy did I feel like a dingbat when figured out what it was -- which wasn't that day!

9. My brother had a similar experience.
He was a teenager working on his car in the driveway after dark using just a work light on an extension cord. At the time, we had an indoor/outdoor white cat that was quite a mean girl and she hissed a lot. He heard hissing and saw something whitish under the edge of the car by his leg, reached down to pet it and realized it was a possum. That was when I found out they hiss.

Several years later, after I'd moved out, my Mom had an encounter when a Momma possum came out from under their crawl space with babies hanging on her back and tail.

7. ugh. Possums--I see them in the city.
They just freak me out to no end, all pointy-faced and lumbering about with their giant freaky bodies. Bleh!

10. yup. got tons of them in chicago. i don't mind them too much.
they eat bugs, so i like 'em. it is true they freak you out when you bump into them at night.
but at least they aren't skunks, which we also have plenty of. DH has seen them, but i have only smelled them. and fortunately, the dogs have yet to get skunked. i have no idea why i am so lucky on that count, since they have taken down several possums and squirrels.

8. I had to remove a dead possum from the latice under my porch
apparantly at some point a big possum tried to sqeeze through the tiny openings in the latice work under the porch. He got his ass stuck and he died. It was a less than pleasent job taking the latice apart to free the dead possum.

12. Hahahahaha...
cute. :)

The random capitalization is annoying though.

And the hate for possums in this thread is just... just wrong. You haters. They can't help it if they're ugly and foul-tempered. :(
