because I don't know you people (least of all, Brenda), but fuckin' A--I HAD that vacuum

and it was the most awesome thing ever. Manufactured in 1947, I inherited it from the grizzled old lady who retired from the university post office in about 1980. That thing ran for another 20 years before my hairy family finally killed it. No bags needed because that twill bag came off to empty it out, and it had all kinds of funky attachments, including a weird contraption you were supposed to fill with mothballs and close in the closet to fumigate whatever you could fit in there with it. (Apparently, if you left the vac running for a few hours, the mothballs vaporized.)

I went through new vacs yearly after that, until I got my Dyson. This thing can suck the guts out of a sheep and is apparently indestructible, though I'd bet everything it won't come close to that old Hoover.

I probably should have bronzed that old vac. When they started designing planned obsolescence into everything, that's when the world started going to hell. No one's going to be waxing nostalgic about their cheap, plastic crap that lasted for 50 years ever again because that 1947 is probably the last time they made anything that would. :thumbsdown:
