I usually make a variation of this recipie, either with all brown sugar instead of white sugar, or half brown sugar and half Splenda.

I did it with only maple syrup and Splenda once before when making a pie for the office -- some people were doing a weight loss competition so we were asked to bring both a healthy item and a traditional item. It came out fine and people kept asking me if it was really the healthier version, but I prefer the taste of it with only brown sugar.

Even with Splenda and maple syrup instead of white or brown sugar, however, I wouldn't recommend it to a diabetic, because of the maple syrup.

I've never been a meringue fan. My grandmother used to make a pie that looks exactly like your photo, though!
