But choose Berkeley - great school and the Bay Area is so much nicer than L.A. And it's where all the best DU'ers live. :P

both schools are competitive, and my math score on the sat was just about average. my verbal score was really high, but my math brought down my composite. i'm worried that'll hurt me, and i'm not sure how much my extracurriculars will help me x( i'm so nervous about it all

I'm in my forties and am not particularly ambitious.

But I think you stand an excellent chance. And even if those two schools don't pan out, you'll do great elsewhere. You can hardly help it.

almost have my application done. i've got some great letters of recommendation lined up too. harvard is a stretch though, considering that most people that apply there have insanely high SAT scores. i don't think my extracurriculars will pull much weight there, but i don't know.

39. I went to UCLA for grad school ...
I loved the area -- I never lived on campus, so I don't know what life might be like for freshmen, but there are a lot of apartments within walking / bus distance and Westwood /Santa Monica / Brentwood etc. areas can be a lot of fun.

Good luck! Either school will be lucky to have you!

finishing a math PHD.

LA is an interesting city, with an amazing amount of cultural diversity. More Iranians live there than any city except Tehran, and they are not the only ones like that.

Good luck!

But he's probably a bit old for her, and has a girlfriend. And wants to get out of LA as soon as he's done in the spring. Possibly to Vancouver, in fact, which I would be thrilled with, since I'm in Seattle.
