From how you represented his reasons for breaking up, he seems like a decent enough person. He probably feels bad about what he did to you, and maybe by being friends with you he hopes to assuage his guilt.

But I don't think you owe it to him, not while you're hurting. He should give you the space you need. If later when you've got over the hurt, you really do want to be his friend then okay. Until then, I think you're perfectly right to want to keep some distance, and he needs to understand that.
