I'm going to kill the asshole who came up with those on-screen tv pop-up ads
You know, the ones that take up the bottom third of your screen with ads for other shows on the network you're already viewing? And I love how they stay up for like five minutes, so that you miss a whole bunch of what's going on in the movie and totally obliterate any subtitles.

It's bad enough that every network has to have its own masturbatory logo in the bottom right. The move to crowd the screen with even more crap that interferes with the crap that I'm trying to watch!

1. Just wait,

2. You know, that reminds me
I've noticed lately that films occupy a much larger timeslot than is actually necessary for their running times. I've already seen an 84-minute film air from 8:00 to 11:00pm, and you know that the other 96 minutes aren't being filled with savvy political commentary.

3. You know... I haven't watchede tv in two and a half years now
and I don't miss that shit at all.

But if tv is your thing, I'm sorry they're ruining the experience for you. It sucks that they have to crowd everything with advertisements. :(

5. Thanks for your sympathy, and it's nice to see you here again!
I don't actually watch all that much tv, at least not for myself. Most of what we watch is on Noggin, a network for young kids that doesn't run ads at all, except promotional bits for other shows on the network, and those only air between programs.

19. I've never even bothered to buy my own TV.
If a roommate has one, I'll watch it. That's 'bout it. :P

23. I somehow acquired 2 large screen tvs. My roommates
watched them. They both broke down eventually. I just got rid of them. I have a small, old tv that still works. My nephew is using it.

I keep hearing there is good stuff on tv worth watching. I should check out some of it some time, but I never get around to it. Commercials piss me off.

24. That's why the gods invented the internet.
So you can illegally download stuff instead of watching it on TV. :P

6. Exactly!
The only thing I can say for Fear.net in this regard is that the actual commercials are pretty brief IIRC. Of course, a lot of them are for military recruitment, so...

10. I've only seen maybe half a dozen films in the genre
Generally I find that, although they're effectively atmospheric, they often lack something in the actual film-making that puts me off a bit. I'm no film snob, either; right now I'm watching 1939's The Phantom Creeps with Bela Lugosi.

12. I'm kind of the same way
The occasional human killer is okay if it's done in a new and interesting way, but these usually wind up being "mystery/suspense" rather than "horror." And I agree with you about slasher flicks--they seldom offer much of interest for me.

Didn't del Toro produce it? IIRC, the director's style was very compatible with del Toro's.

22. The Lugosi film?
It's on a Pittsburgh-based station; it's this week's broadcast of The It's Alive Show, which hosts "vintage" horror films with skits and local-themed commentary.

The broadcast just ended for tonight, but you can watch it online during the week by following the link above.

15. Earlier this evening I was watching LOTR: The Two Towers
The entire time it was on, there was a static ad in the lower left corner of the screen for The Librarian, the third (I think) film in a made-for-tv series staring Noah Wylie. Sure, the ad was in that semi-transparent white font, but it was still there and still clear enough to be constantly annoying.

27. One time I was watching an episode of "Monk"...
And the entire time they were showing an ad in the lower left-hand corner of the screen for a movie called "Bait Shop" starring the craptacular Bill Engvall. And this was a new episode of the show, BTW. :grr:

26. I second that!
I think Matt Groening satirized them in a Simpsons episode, too.

I wish the FCC would outlaw them. We're trying to watch TV already, for fuck's sake.
