Poll question: I haven't seen my copy of Mulholland Drive in about 6 months |
|
Should I break down and order another copy?

most guys remember only for a couple well-placed lesbian scenes. With all due respect to the author of the OP, I can't understand why anyone likes it.

6. Because the bit with the derelict by the diner is a rare, truly horrifying moments in American film |
|
The scenes at the theater and the fucked up layering of action versus fantasy versus dream versus nightmare is also rare.
It's not Lynch's best work, but it stands out as one of the year's remarkable films.
Also, it has that real estate developer from Poltergeist who didn't move the bodies.

7. I see your point, but I guess it just didn't strike me that way. |
|
It struck me as if Lynch just wanted several possible explanations to the film and hoped people would discuss and argue the point to the end of time. I don't require everything spelled out for me and generally prefer when it's not, but a movie has to hold my interest as well. This one bored the crap out of me, and I watched it only because it was my girlfriend's turn to pick.
The derelict / dumpster scene just didn't have that much impact on me.
(Not trying to be being argumentative here, mind you, I just didn't like the movie)

|
Well, not really.
I saw the film in the theater, and when it ended (abruptly!), an older guy a few rows behind us yelled "you've got to be kidding me!"
So your dislike of the movie is shared by that guy, at least!

Of the people I know who have seen it, I only know one who liked it. As Murphy's Law would naturally ensure, I live with her.

the retort not only suggested itself, but in fact was the only weapon in my arsenal at the time. I've long since discovered that when I disagree with someone on a movie, there is almost no chance I'll be able to convince that person that he or she is wrong. ;)
Kidding aside, I can't say I absolutely loathed the movie, it just bored me. Movies that I loathed are so bad that I gag when thinking of them; examples include Master of Disguise (Dana Carvey), Laser Mission (Brandon Lee), and other similar dreck.

20. Well, the film started out as an unaired TV pilot that ABC passed on. |
|
Lynch took a bunch of the footage from that, got some financing and shot some more film, and patched it all together. I happen to think that he did a great job considering the circumstances, but it is a bit disjointed as a result.
Also, I don't think that Lynch is really ever shooting for many-explanation-water-cooler-chitchat mindfuck movies, they just seem that way because he is not as focused on the narrative as almost all other mainstream filmmakers. A lot of stuff in his movies gets put in because he just likes the imagery, or because it has some personal symbolism to him (like the sparking electricity in almost all his movies), and because he is very interested in dreams.

25. Well, that makes Lynch sort of like country or rap to me. |
|
No matter how skillfully done or how imaginative, I just don't like the style. It's not any of you, it's me.

The second it's shipped, you'll find the other one. It's not good enough to justify the ownership of two copies.

It's not the most popular movie and you don't want it going out of print on you. Maybe because I'm paranoid, if I know I'm going to use something that's eventually going to be a rare, I buy back up copies.

24. If it's important to you |
|
and you think you will watch it multiple times, I would say it's worth it. If the the original turns up, you could give it to someone who's open to unconventional approaches to narrative, or maybe sell it. By the way, I think it's a great film.
