Is anyone here allergic to Splenda?
I tend to avoid artificial sweeteners, since most of them make me feel kind of gross.

I had a juice drink with Splenda in it last night, not knowing it had it before I bought it. I figured it would be okay, though.

I started to feel nauseous after drinking it. Then I threw up - three times. I'm okay now, pretty much, though.

So, has anyone here had a similar reaction to the stuff? Because it might have been that, or perhaps I had a reaction to something else I ate.

1. I tried it once and threw it away. I don't get that kind of reaction to it,
Edited on Sun Nov-30-08 12:53 PM by old mark
but I get a very bad aftertaste. I have bought some canned things with Splenda without realizing it (didn't read the label) and get the same aftertaste.
I recently decided to stop using artificial sweeteners completely, because I'm beginning to think they are worse for me than sugar.
I get very bad reactions to several things that are supposed to be "safe" - I can not tollerate any decongestants at all -
and I would not be surprized if your reaction was to Splenda.

2. Ewww.
Never had that problem. Splenda's one of the ones that works better for me. I can't stand most artificial sweeteners. They don't make me sick, but they just don't work with my tastebuds or something. :P

3. If by "allergic" you mean "think it tastes like ass."
Never made me sick, but it's nasty.

4. Mr. MG has a bad reaction if he imbibes some artificial sweetener unexpectedly
He also can't tolerate MSG. "Better living through chemistry" does not apply in his case.

I don't know if I would have a bad reaction or not--I avoid any artificial sweeteners like the plague. The aftertaste of even a tiny sip of an artificially sweetened drink gets to me. :puke:

5. Splenda is chemically very close to cyanide
It was actually discovered when trying to devise a new rat poison. In order to bind chlorine to the sugars (we're supposed to believe they're bound together in such a way that they pass harmlessly through our bodies), they actually need to use numerous toxins to create sucralose. According to the Splenda International Patent A23L001-236 and PEP Review #90-1-4 (July 1991), sucralose is synthesized by a five-step process, using these ingredients--none of which sounds like something you'd want to eat:

1. Acetone
2. Acetic acid
3. Acetyl alcohol
4. Acetic anhydride
5. Ammonium chloride
6. Benzene
7. Chlorinated sulfates
8. Ethyl alcohol
9. Isobutyl ketones
10. Formaldehyde
11. Hydrogen chloride
12. Lithium chloride
13. Methanol
14. Sodium methoxide
15. Sulfuryl chloride
16. Trityl chloride
17. Toluene
18. Thionyl chloride

Aspartame (NutraSweet) is even worse, causing neurological short circuits and blackouts. Just confirms my belief that "better living through chemistry" should not include food. I don't think it's a coincidence that cancer and behavioral problems have skyrocketed since they've been experimenting on us this way. Your body probably just did you a huge favor by rejecting this stuff. The dumbest thing is that artificial sweeteners actually cause the same reaction in your body as natural carbohydrates, which is why you still get a rush and a letdown. The only low-cal sweetener that doesn't is Stevia, which is an herb. If you don't mind its slightly licorice flavor and must have sweetener, it's the best way to go.

14. I had never heard of Stevia. Some interesting stuff found on it though
In 1991, at the request of an anonymous complaint, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) labeled stevia as an "unsafe food additive" and restricted its import. The FDA's stated reason was "toxicological information on stevia is inadequate to demonstrate its safety."<39> This ruling was controversial, as stevia proponents pointed out that this designation violated the FDA's own guidelines under which any natural substance used prior to 1958 with no reported adverse effects should be generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

Stevia occurs naturally, requiring no patent to produce it. As a consequence, since the import ban in 1991, marketers and consumers of stevia have shared a belief that the FDA acted in response to industry pressure.<15> Arizona congressman Jon Kyl, for example, called the FDA action against stevia "a restraint of trade to benefit the artificial sweetener industry."<40> Citing privacy issues, the FDA has not revealed the source of the original complaint in its responses to requests filed under the Freedom of Information Act.<15>

The FDA requires proof of safety before recognizing a food additive as safe. A similar burden of proof is required for the FDA to ban a substance or label it unsafe. Nevertheless, stevia remained banned until after the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act forced the FDA in 1995 to revise its stance to permit stevia to be used as a dietary supplement, although not as a food additive — a position that stevia proponents regard as contradictory because it simultaneously labels stevia as safe and unsafe, depending on how it is sold.<41>

Although unresolved questions remain concerning whether metabolic processes can produce a mutagen from stevia in animals, let alone in humans, the early studies nevertheless prompted the European Commission limit stevia's use in food in the European Union pending further research.<17> More recent data compiled in the safety evaluation released by the World Health Organization in 2006<22> suggest that these policies may be obsolete.

17. stevia really tastes awful
I was seduced by the "natural" thing...but it really has a very noticeable taste and aftertaste which I found very unpleasant.

6. that sounds like food poisoning, so i doubt it's the splenda
Edited on Sun Nov-30-08 03:10 PM by pitohui
unfortunately i do suspect i have an allergy to splenda, which is unfortunate, as it's the one artificial sweetener with a good taste, not so over sweet as the others

however, the reaction is not immediate, severe vomiting, that sounds like food poisoning

had the juice been sitting out for awhile or, more likely, have you been eating turkey/poultry or anything with eggs that was sitting out too long on a buffet?

as far as splenda is close to cyanide, sure, and salt is close to chlorine blah blah blah

i am allergic to cats, it doesn't mean that cats are made of cyanide or that everyone should avoid them

7. Use stevia
Edited on Sun Nov-30-08 03:54 PM by astral
You can get the powder, the clear liquid extract (which you measure by the DROP) or the dark extract. Just get a brand that doesn't add other ingredients, Sweetleaf is a good one.

edit -- I didn't see the previous mention of stevia. I personally do not think it tastes anything like licorice. I hate licorice.

but that seems to be a common complaint amongst people who say they don't like it. *shrug*

undigestible. I don't vomit; I get trouble on the exit cycle, so to speak. Terrible.

Mostly the opposite problem than yours. I hate it because I know people who cook with it & insist they used "sugar" when I ask.

16. I also suggest Stevia. For me, there's no comparison. I can get
it in packets or drops. I love it. I'm highly allergice to Sorbitol which is in many sugar free concoctions. I've never had a reaction (that I know of from Splenda) You can get Stevia at Trader Jo's, or any health food place.
