What is it with my parents and the Weather Channel? |
|
It seems to be on every waking hour at their house. Is it a retirement thing? They're in their 70's and apparently this practice is not unique to them. The first 5 minutes of every conversation is about the weather.
OK, I understand that certain weather makes them uncomfortable and occasionally there can be tornado excitement, but this goes on even when it is sunny, calm and comfortable.

1. Weather sure played a big part in my in-laws lives... |
|
They were farmers, raised by farmers and when weather reports came to them (electronically) in an instant... they were entranced.
When the Weather Channel was new to TV my f-i-l used to argue the weather prediction and if he was correct you would hear about it. :)

2. My in-laws are very weather-oriented too (former farmers) |
|
Once in awhile my MIL will call up and say: "Are you all okay? Are you flooded?" or something like that because she's seen that someplace in the northwest had some heavy rain. :) Sweet of her to care about us.

6. Do their children live far away from them? |
|
Maybe it helps them feel connected.
Just a pet theory I have.
I could be completely wrong of course!

7. Weather is fascinating. It's not just about what the local weather is |
|
You can see what the weather is anywhere in the US. And what used to be a mystery is now explained by the people on the weather channel.
Sometimes I have it on for long periods of time in the background. There's always something interesting going on. I just wish we had more world wide weather. Here in California weather is not very exciting. It's always so perfect. Eat your hearts out you non-Californians!

9. Crap. Walk into any bar or restaurant in Southeast Kansas. |
|
All but one of the televisions in the place is tuned to The Weather Channel Out of five televisions in a bar, you might have ONE dedicated to the game at hand.

in a matter of minutes, I got hooked. I don't usually leave it on all day now, though. I'll check the radar on-line for precip before going for a walk if rain's expected.
On edit: I'm 57.
