Tomorrow they are announcing layoffs at work according to my source. |
|
We all knew it was inevitable as we have been doing week long shutdowns since May. The company built a new plant in Mexico that is highly automated and has been in production for six months now. They can produce the same product every 30 seconds vs our 2 1/2 minutes. They also do not have a human doing it. Our plant is a union plant which pays our builders 25 dollars an hour, they don't have to pay the machines anything.
The rumor is they are laying off anyone with less than eight years seniority. As far as staff employees, I have not heard the plans but I am sure quite a few of us will be let go. Although I have seventeen years with them I am not sure if I will survive the cuts. It is all dependent on how they want to handle it. Tomorrow is going to be an interesting day.

when they finally lay off the last human being because a machine can do his job, who will buy the shit that the machines make?
I guess I never will get the genius of capitalism.

5. I'm not "too worried" about my job but....... |
|
I HATE to see good union jobs disappear like that. These guys/gals are on their feet 12 hours each shift and work hard for the money. Unfortunately it is hard to compete against a machine. These people have bought homes based on the income which will be impossible to replace without extensive retraining. Of course selling these homes in this economic climate is going to be tough. I am anticipating we will lose up to 6-700 jobs at our facility. That's six or seven hundred families thrown into a financial crisis.
I am not to worried for my own personal well being. House is paid for, no bills. I really hate the place & my job but have continued working there while I saved cash so I can try my own thing. If they offer us a halfway decent severance package I just may take it so some other person can continue working & I can do something else. I would look at it as an "opportunity".
