Who is your favorite Victorian novelist? |
|

Provided you've read more than one or two.
Mine would be Anna Karenina, although Tolstoy is considered the bridge to modern literature he put Victorian life and its hypocrisies in a seamlessly written and timeless vehicle.
I like that he exposes the double standard between what is acceptable for men and women.
Last night, PBS had Tess of the d'Urbervilles on. Such a sad story that also points to the double standards between men/women.
For pure joy in reading brilliant writing there is Oscar Wilde and the Picture of Dorian Gray.
Does anyone read this stuff anymore?

I love "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone" -- highly entertaining Victorian page-turners.

11. I was going to say, at least Dickens usually gives us a happy ending. But Bleak House |
