[sigh] Any MS Word gurus around? |
|
I need some help.
Okay, I'm editing this manuscript. The author sent me the introduction first; I edited it and saved. Next, author sent the first few chapters, with the introduction edits I'd made not saved into that file. I edited the new material and saved. Finally, author sent the whole ms. I edited the new material, and Word crashed and the recovered file (containing the last 50 pages of edits) is in the newest version of Word (.docx instead of .doc) that may or may not work with author's older version.
:banghead:
So, I have four different files for this one ms...and my brain is waaaay too frazzled to figure out how to merge them. I don't even remember which one to start from when I merge. If I open up the intro and tell it to merge with another doc, which is the source and which is the destination doc? Do I start with the final recovered .docx file and work backward?
Oh, this is not good.
Help?

1. My life was just like yours until I discovered Pagemaker. |

It is Called "In Design" now.
Word is impossible when it comes to long documents requiring numbered pages on and numbered pages off (such as in a book)
There is a yahoo group called "word-ms@yahoogroups.com" , and the mods can be nice about helping with sorting disasters out. But don't ever complain about Word on that site cuz they think it is the greatest program since "Price Is Right"

Yup, books are a challenge.
I'm sort of hoping I can copy and "save as" the final .docx file as a .doc. Then start with the intro & merge it into the first few chapters, and finally merge that doc into the resaved final file.
I'll try that group in morning--I'm too annoyed and fried to do much else with it tonight. Thanks for the suggestion.

to make docx files backward compatible with doc files. I just awoke to use the bathroom and I am heading off back to bed, but I will take a quick look and post a link if I find it.

7. Finally, whatever you do, I would back up all the original files on a CD or flash drive... |
|
before downloading a patch.
