OK, I've been in New York for going on 3 years since leaving in LA, and most of the time I love it. BUT--
Every winter now for three years running I've slipped on a patch of ice on the street. In 2007, I landed flat on my back. In 2008, I fell forward and got a really nice coat stained with dirt and mush.
Today, on my way to the gym of all places, I slipped on a piece right near the edge. One foot stayed on concrete, the other went flying out onto asphalt, taking my body with it. So now, with a date tonight and a Super Bowl party tomorrow, I may have to stay at home with a sprained ankle.
I don't mind the cold and I love snow, but goddamn ice is without a doubt the most annoying aspect of winter in New York.

Ice even worse than snow and cold. That's one big reason I'd love to get out of the snow belt. But as long as I'm here I use Yak Trax on my shoes, or some kind of ice-walking cleats. http://www.yaktrax.com/

6. Be careful! You can kill yourself--literally--slipping on ice. |
|
I heard of a woman who slipped on ice, hit her head and died when I lived in MO.
Hope you have ice on that ankle--and that's no pun!
Maybe your date will bring dinner to your apartment? Maybe someone will come get you for the Super Bowl party?

They treat the walkway but during the day the sun melted some of the ice which ran over the walkway and refroze. I am really lucky I didn't do serious knee damage.

8. Get yourself some Bean Boots |
|
You will look as though you are trekking in the woods but you will be able to stay on your feet..they have rubber bottoms, leather tops and the soles are of a softer rubber (like snow tires) and they have a good tread that gives them great traction. I have one pair that is 8" high and another that is just an insulated shoe in the same style. I live in a city myself but I don't care if I look like a voyageur. The sidewalks are a mess here and I need all the help I can get. http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?page=bean-boots&categoryId=503074&cat4=503002&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&nav=va

I live in a city and I am walking on some kind of pavement, asphalt or cement with varying degrees of snow and ice. Right now the bare pavement is okay & the risk happens with the ice or ice under snow. These traction devices say that they are NOT for use on cement, presumably because they are more slippery than shoe soles then. So what do you do when the streets you cross are pretty much clear of ice but the sidewalks you go to may have some more or less clear stretches, icy stretches, or unavoidable icy bits near newspaper boxes or pedestrian crossing buttons. Can you only walk safely on the icy bits? I never got these simply because I knew that I would not go through all the trouble of wearing them until I came to a building, removing them to do my thing, then replacing them for my walk to my next destination. I'm just too lazy. And it seems that these carry their own additional hazards because they are not ideal for use on mixed surfaces.
"Always walk with extreme care on ice. Yaktrax Walker and Yaktrax Pro are designed to give you confidence and safety in snowy or icy conditions. The Yaktrax Walker and Yaktrax Pro are not for use on gravel, concrete or sanded roads. Avoid surfaces such as marble, tile or any non-icy, non-snowy surfaces when wearing the Yaktrax Walker or Yaktrax Pro."
So when my elderly mom is crossing glaciers, these would be good?

I'm getting tired of all the icy sidewalks around here. One of our neighbors (an absentee landlord) never shovels, and a dwarf glacier is forming in front of his house.

Idiots who are too lazy to get off their fat asses to shovel their sidewalks piss me off too. I can't drive and so I walk the 5 blocks to my college classes and am constantly having to walk on the street because either the sidewalks aren't shoveled or else people don't bother to shovel the ridges of snow from the snowplow that prevent a person from getting on to the sidewalk from the street. Pisses me off.
