The Missouri River is SINKING!
The water depth is'nt changing, the river's ELEVATION is declining a foot a year from Rulo, Neb. to St. Louis. There's been a gradual decline since the 1920's but a more rapid decline started after the 1993 flood. The river's been trying to cut south for years but all the dams, dikes and levees have basically kept it in the same channel so now it's started to carve a mid-Missouri Grand Canyon. It's probably partially man-made but, who knows, this river always throws up a lot of sand so maybe it's hit a zone of soft rock? Anyway, it's dropped twelve feet over the last 50 years at Kansas City and scientists don't know if the decline can be reversed.
