NEW YORK -- Baseball commissioner Bud Selig made more than all but three of his sport's players in 2007.

Selig received a raise of about $3 million to nearly $17.5 million that year, according to Major League Baseball's latest tax return.

His compensation was listed at $17,470,491 for the 12 months that ended Oct. 31, 2007, according to the return, which is available at guidestar.org. That was up from $14,515,071 in the prior 12 months.

MLB's contribution to Selig in its benefit plan was $461,540, an increase from $400,999 in the previous return. He got $422,590 in expense account and other allowances, up from $140,603 in the previous fiscal year.

His total compensatoin adding benefits and expenses was $18.35 million.

1. I've gone ten years eliminating one major sport from my life (The NBA)
.....MLB is very close to being the next in line. These bastards openly complain when one of their high priced million dollar preferred teams doesn't go far in the postseason (Yankees, Red Sox, Mets).

Fuck them.

3. It's bullshit isnt it?
I mean look at the Yankees and their unbelievable spending spree this offseason - 3 players, nearly $400 million. Thankfully the other owners are calling out Steinbrenner's bullshit and are asking for a salary cap.

4. You're right.......
....but looking at your avatar, as a fan of one of the have-nots, it's hard to feel THAT much brotherhood with you.

5. I guess my biggest beef with MLB would be this:

OK, you have your overpaid, overpriced teams like the Red Sox and Yankees who get it in it every year simply because there's no competition. I know my team is guilty of that as well. But then again, the way I see MLB enacting a salary cap is the same way that the NBA does. Say you get a guy like CC Sabathia. Then you couldnt have a Derek Jeter, or Jason Giambi, or any of the other players on the team who are payed millions.

Look at it this way - the NFL does it right, its OK to be a fan of the Colts, the Saints, the Vikings, the Patriots, the Seahawks, the Chargers, the Broncos, even the Lions. You know who Peyton Manning is, and LT, and Tom Brady, and Brett Farve, and so on and so forth. In baseball it is like this:

Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets

and everybody else.

If Selig were to prove himself as a commissioner, he'd find a way to make every team in the league competitive, like in football.

6. I'm sorry, but I think your team still enjoys the freedom of not having a salary cap
Would your guys have been able to land Tori Hunter while losing almost no one last off season or been able to get Texiera for the stretch run without some major contract shuffling if that cap was in place? Following your model, who do you want to get rid of........Vlad, Garret Anderson, Figgins, Lackey, Escobar.....???

I would include the Angels in that group of teams that spend way too much, along with the Tigers and White Sox.

7. They didnt spend hardly anything this year.
I mean yeah sure we have Torri Hunter and Guerrero but they're probably the highest paid guys on the team.

8. This was last year's payroll
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/teams/salaries?team=laa

I forgot the highly overrated and overpaid Gary Matthews Jr.

I hope you don't take it personally that I think your team may be a small part of the problem. I have to deal every day with Red Sox fans who still believe they are the struggling Davids battling Goliath and winning with a bunch of gutty, gritty guys who don't get paid anything other the satisfaction that comes from their love of the game.

9. I think they're gonna flip Matthews in July.
Let some other team handle him that knows how to. I sense Arte is up to something but I do not know what.
