Morris County earthquake shakes residents, spares property
by The Star-Ledger Continuous News Desk
Tuesday February 03, 2009, 10:40 AM

A magnitude 3.0 earthquake that rocked several towns in Morris County Monday left no reported injuries or significant damage so far, authorities said.

But the quake left many residents shaken up after they felt the floors underneath them move and heard what sounded like an explosion.

1. I live on the Canadian Shield, the oldest most geologically stable part of North America
Unfortunately, we don't feel much of anything. Especially in winter, when everything is froze shut. Yeah, you heard me, EVERYTHING.

 :D

3. A magnitude 3 shouldn't cause much damage...
Even on the east coast, where buildings are not necessarily built with seismic standards in mind. About the time you get a high magnitude 5, (5.6-5.9) you start to see damage. The really scary stuff comes with magnitude 6 or 7 (I won't mention 8, because as far as I know the only place east of the Rockies that might get one of those is the New Madrid Fault in Missouri/Illinois. So everyone should be fine.

14. Out here a 3.0 would barely warrant a mention in the news
But a small thunderstorm would be on the front page. Cracks me up.

Don't be scared - just the earth getting a little more comfy. :hi:
