12. In Chinese, the word for cat is "mao"
no, not like him; it's in a different tone.

In 'olelo Hawai'i, one word for "cat" is 'oau.

"Who was the chairman of the Chinese Communist Party?" Mao!

"What was the name of the guerrilla movement that was active in Kenya during the 1950s?" Mau Mau!

Precocious little girl, she was...

21. Here's a selection from Todd Rundgren's "Onomatopoeia":
(From the "Hermit of Mink Hollow" album)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaVrswuk_Fc

Onomatopoeia every time I see ya
My senses tell me hubba
And I just can't disagree
I get a feeling in my heart that I can't describe
It's sort of lub, dub, lub, dub
A sound in my head that I can't describe
It's sort of zoom, zip, hiccup, drip
Ding, dong, crunch, crack, bark, meow, whinnie, quack

Onomatopoeia in proximity ya
Rearrange my brain in a strange cacophony
I get a feeling somewhere that I can't describe
It's sort of uh, uh, uh, uh
A sound in my head that I can't describe
It's sort of whack, whir, wheeze, whine
Sputter, splat, squirt, scrape
Clink, clank, clunk, clatter
Crash, bang, beep, buzz
Ring, rip, roar, retch
Twang, toot, tinkle, thud
Pop, plop, plunk, pow
Snort, snuk, sniff, smack
Screech, splash, squish, squeek
Jingle, rattle, squeel, boing
Honk, hoot, hack, belch

26. My 10 y.o. son was yelling "Onomatopoeia!" down the zip lines a couple weeks ago.

We were in Mexico, and the guides didn't have a clue about what he was screaming as he flew from tree to tree.

It's now one of the guides favorite words - we wrote it down for him so he wouldn't forget it. :D

So for right now, I'd have to say that "zip" is my favorite onomatopoeia. :hi:

27. I was told by someone who should know that 40 years ago
the Montagnards in Vietnam's central highlands would call
their weapons, "Bong", which is the sound that it makes.
The story is that they thought the noise killed people
because they couldn't grasp the concept that something
like a bullet could travel faster than they could see.
