Any indication a card ever existed is destroyed. Then, come the big day, the birthday boy or girl feels shunned and hated thus building resentment for their fellow co-workers. I, on the other hand, make a special trip to their desk/cube/office to offer a personal "Happy Birthday!" making their day and bolstering my importance and value to that colleague. Do that to enough folks over the course of the year, and you can be their king.

You know....the ones that say "Happy Birthday from Everybody here at the Zoo" and then there are cartoon character giraffes and hippos and zebras and snakes and hyenas? With those, I always sign my name on the giraffe character.

I just sort of like giraffes.
