We got a letter from our landlord today |
|
Apparently, I've been underpaying my rent by $10 every month since Last June (when the new lease went into effect).
Weird he just told me in February of the following year. I guess they don't look at the checks and just deposit them.

and pay back $80. He did say "in no way feel that this needs to be paid immediately."
I think I'll give him an extra dollar a month for a while.

11. Was it noted in the lease about the $10 increase |
|
of the monthly rent? If not, you do not have to pay the back rent. I'd check the lease.

13. Actually, our rent went up about $170/mo last year. |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 07:46 PM by sniffa
It was expected to drop by $110 because we went from 3 tenants to 2 ($100 more per person for utilities which are covered; and $10 more for that half of a car we apparently park in our spot). Instead, they raised it $60. I thought it was only $50 which is their usual increase. Also, my first check was an abnormal amount to cover the new balance for my security and last month - so I wrote that first check and continued doing so. D'oh!
They could have told me prior. :eyes:
Edit: Can't track down the new lease right now but what was in the letter is ringing a bell. I'm sure they're probably right.

17. Okay, so you may or may not find your lease, and you sound like |
|
you think he's right... and it's not worth losing your lease over, either...
BUT - it seems a little vague - on his part, maybe - I'm not sure. Anyway, one thing you don't want in a financial contract like a lease is a lot of vagueness and fluidity.
I would suggest, perhaps (if you can do it without seeming to insult him or doubt him - even if you might doubt him a little) writing up a little memo that you sign and make a copy of - and better yet, if you can have him sign it (and you keep it, tell him you'll make a copy for him) - JUST to have a record that you've been underpaying and you are now rectifying it.
Otherwise, it seems possible the numbers could move again, perhaps? And that just makes things stressful. Maybe this isn't necessary, but in my experience - having a record can really come in handy when you never ever thought you'd need it.... : )
Good luck! And when you find your lease, scan it and put it on your computer as a back up.

I was paying $1530... and I was pissed about that increase. Now I'm going to be more pissed until June (when I pray it won't increase yet again) more pissier about having to throw in an extra $80 at some point to cover my missing the $1540 rent these 8 months. :eyes:

21. I got a letter from my apartment office stating I owed them $0.30. |
|
Yep. Thirty cents. Apparently I wrote the first month's rent, which was a partial month, for $XXX.20, when the correct amount was $XXX.50.
Ooops.
