Redstone's advice for tonight: Don't shovel snow when you have a broken rib.
Seriously. It's better to have snow in your driveway.

1. Now why in the world would someone go and do a thing like that?
Ow. Hurts just thinking about it.

8. Because I'm stupid, maybe? Or not maybe, but ACTUALLY stupid? That's the unfortunate truth.

2. I'll keep that in mind if I ever have a broken rib. Or a driveway. Or snow.
I'm pretty much of the "I'd rather pay the neighbor kid" school on outdoor chores anyhow, due to my allergies. Last time I tried to mow a lawn- we still have to do that here midwinter, which is the downside of the whole no snow thing- my eyes swelled shut.

5. Strangely, there was a time I could have used that advice.
I did the same thing once, and took very little time to realize my mistake.

29. No, sir, I'm an idiot too.
I hope, by the way, that you're not having the same troubles sleeping that I had when I broke my rib. Every time I tossed or turned, which was often, I'd wake up swearing.

30. Fortunately, Mrs R is used to hearing me moan every time I turn over at night.
The rib's just one more entry in the catalog of broken parts my body contains.

6. My dear Redstone...
And how did you manage to break your rib? Or should I even ask?

You are a very strong man!

I'm just glad we don't have snow in our driveway...:scared:

Please take care of yourself, sweetie...

9. Well, I blacked out a couple of weeks ago, standing up too fast while I was getting
used to the new medication, and clipped the corner of a table on the way down to the floor.

Mrs R freaked. But no big deal, I'd broken that rib before, so the only real result (besides waiting for it to heal) is that I have two lumps on that rib instead of one.

Just another damn thing after another. As you probably know, a broken rib is more of an inconvenience than a real problem because it's like a broken toe: there's really nothing you can do about it except to wait for it to heal.

And not shovel snow.

17. In the winter of 99-00, I shoveled snow with a broken wrist
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 12:01 PM by NewJeffCT
my cast was initially up past my elbow, and then was below my elbow... but, I went out there and shoveled my damn driveway one-handed with my other arm just used to balance the shovel.

My parents came to help me out once or twice during the bigger snowfalls.

I have since bought a snowblower.

Do you have a friendly neighbor that can help out in exchange for beer and/or a pizza?

walking on crutches, etc. But hey, it's good to hear I'm not the only maniac around.

24. well, I broke my wrist in Florida
and, a few days later, had to drive across Florida on Alligator Alley to get to the airport. Driving one-handed isn't a big deal, but swerving to avoid an alligator crossing the road was a bit tough.

25. How about driving a car with a manual transmission with a cast on your right leg, or with
your left arm tightly strapped to your body with a strap apparatus (we're talking much more restrictive than a sling)?

I've done both. I'm an idiot among idiots.

28. Be appreciative. I've broken pretty much every bone above the waist on my left side, and
pretty much every one below the waist on my right side.

No specific reason for that; it just worked out that way.

18. i would have done the same thing
wait for the kids to shovel
yea right.
wait for their mother to shovel
even less likely

but the snow has to be gotten rid of
and those who say just wait for it to melt--little too far north for that.

21. Well, if I hadn't done it, Mrs R would have. And she'd shoveled in the morning, so I
figured it was my turn.

We need a smaller driveway!

unfortunately it's not an option.

23. No driveway is the best choice.
A friend of mine who has lived in Florida all her life visited us here in NH. She asked why most of the houses were built so close to the roads. Once I stopped laughing, I asked her how much cubic feet of snow would there on a fifty x ten foot driveway, given a standard snow dump of two feet. She thought for a moment, "That's a lot of snow." "Ayeup and after three storms and three a wintah are about average, you run out of places to put it. Try throwing wet snow on top of a six foot pile. Long driveways can kill ya."
