So one of my son's teachers comes down to me during school today |
|
and prefaces her story with "Do you hate it when a teacher comes to you during work?" That is usually not a fun way to start the conversation... LOL! Anyway, this boy of mine had two assignments that he was missing from teen living class. The teacher was KIND enough to hand deliver replacement worksheets for both assignments during his study hall, but my 13 1/2 year old 8th grade boy decides that he's only gonna do and turn in ONE. This has caused his grade to drop. When do teens start listening? He has learning disabilities, and gets help at school, but he's quite capable of making GOOD choices.
Am I gonna have to wait for him to become a young adult before he realizes that I'm right a lot of the time?
Since he is a boy, will he EVER?

what they used to call Home Ec 'cept they do more than cook and sew, and both boys and girls take it. It's a life skills class, an elective, in middle school for 8th graders. It's actually a great class. Helped my kid take care of my husband for dinner when I was recovering from surgery... LOL! He did the cooking and my husband didn't starve. They do career development in there too. It's pretty cool.

2. You are for sure going to have to wait until he becomes older |
|
for him to realize that mama and daddy know best. It is beyond teenage comprehension I believe! :P

3. That's some personal service by the teacher... |
|
I would have received a weekly progress report showing missed/failed assignments. (Debi, Jr. has mental disabilities and received services @ school as well - so he had very monitored assignments and tests). Most studens' parents would just see the bad grade at mid-term or semester.
As for your 'will he ever....' - NO, and not because he's male but because your his parent and we are rarely right.

11. There are days I like working where my kid goes to school |
|
and others not so much as I cringe when I see one of his teachers headed toward my desk.
I usually get emails from this teacher like the other parents do, but she wanted to let me know in person because that particular 0 made his grade drop considerably from an A.

16. It was the phone calls that made me cringe |
|
They all started with ..."everything's fine here I just had a couple of questions..." If everything was fine WHY are you calling me???? x(
Debi Jr.'s best was that he got an A on all Biology assignments and FAILED every single exam. He received a (barely) C- in the class b/c of extra credit work (which was higher than the class average of D). I beleive our communicating w/the teacher and having the opportunity to KNOW what his assignments/tests were the only reason he didn't fail that class.
Keep at it - maybe your son's knowing that you can look over his shoulder at any moment will help him keep the grades up.

I refuse to go to the high school to work.
I worked at the elementary school and left to come to the middle school when the young pup was in the 4th grade. He had 4th and 5th w/out me there and it worked well for us both. I switched to the middle school only to stay on this end of the county and to be on the same schedule the boy is on 'cause hubby works 24 hour shifts and this meant no after school care or anything like that.
I'll be getting the phone calls and emails next year, I'm sure.

8. This should have earned him at least a B in a class called Teen Living. |
|
I mean, he seems to have learned the skill of slacking. If he can master the belligerence, too, your young padawan will have learned well indeed. :D
